An Arlington Heights church called on the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban against homosexual participants. The United Church of Christ handed out fliers Sunday, Feb. 3 asking its congregation to write letters opposing the anti-gay policy, the Chicago Tribune reported. "Our position is that LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) folks, whether they're minors or whether they're adults, have a role to play in our society and our culture," Rev. Rex Piercy told the Tribune. "This (Scouting) organization, which seeks the support of churches like ours, ... stands against the very kind of welcome that we extend to those folks." The youth organization is considering lifting its ban against gay members and leaders, NBC News reported. …

The Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion and others came out to Jackman Park in Glenview to retire an American flag.
In what has become an annual Flag Day tradition, nearly 100 people turned out to watch an American flag retirement ceremony in Jackman Park June 14. Community groups from around the North Shore—including the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 166 from Glenview, Boy Scouts of American Troop 175 from Niles and Cub Scouts from the Glenview New Church, came together for the park's 10th flag retirement ceremony. "It's very important because the younger generation only learns from the older people," Larry Theriault, Past Faithful Navigator for the Knights of Columbus in Glenview said. Parents and students were joined by their Scout masters, troop committee members and volunteers on Sunday, February 13, for Boy Scout Troop 107's annual fundraising event. The pancake breakfast was held at Paluch Hall in the basement of Our Lady of Ransom Church, 8300 N. Greenwood in Niles. Proceeds of the event will benefit the troop, according to its scout master, Maryellene Riemer, who is herself a mother of three Eagle scouts.
