River Road in Des Plaines: Martha P. of Park Ridge was one lucky guest at Rivers Casino to be awarded $25,000 in the month-long Cash Knockout giveaway on Oct. 4. Martha said she had a feeling that she was going to win when she entered today’s drawing. She was fitted with a boxing robe and gloves, and punched through circle number 32 on the Cash KO board, which revealed a cash prize of $25,000. When asked why she selected circle 32 on the Cash KO board, Martha said she chose that circle because she was born in 1932. The board enacted a 0.25 percent sales tax increase to help fund anti-flooding measures. It went into effect July 1.
On Tuesday, the Niles village board voted to approve its mammoth, $15 million Stormwater Relief Program. Three years in the making, it's intended to prevent the flooding that has besieged many areas of the village for decades. On Sunday, the 0.25 percent sales tax that the village passed back in January to fund flood-relief efforts went into effect. Earlier: Niles Ups Sales Tax To Fund Flood Relief At that time, many businesses and residents were not aware Niles had increased the sales tax. Niles' sales tax now stands at 9.5 percent. It went down to 9.25 percent on Jan. 1, 2012, because Cook County lowered its sales tax. However, the 0.25 percent (25 cents on $100) Niles sales tax increase on July 1 brought it back up to 9.5 percent…

Prairie View Plaza may or may not be demolished. If it is, it will likely be moved back 25 feet.
After the village of Morton Grove last week approved a redevelopment plan for the Dempster Street and Waukegan Road area, including Prairie View Plaza, the question mark hanging over the area is "What next?" Alan Saposnik, the development manager and property manager for the owner, Federal Construction, said he's in talks with with businesses interested in locating there. "We continue to move forward to get leasing for the property," he said. "We're making progress with a couple of major tenants, but it's not yet close enough to announce." Earlier: Morton Grove OKs TIF to redevelop Dempster-Waukegan Saposnik, of Tower Real Estate Service Ltd. in Skokie, said the first thing is to lease to anchor tenants before filling in with …

Five lucky people win a dinner featuring an updated Polish classic in this week's Guess the Food contest. Are you one of them?
If you've lived in the Niles-Morton Grove area for awhile, or if you're of Polish heritage, you've probably been to White Eagle Banquets on Milwaukee Avenue in Niles. White Eagle is the answer to this week's "Guess the Food" contest, in which we asked you to look at a pictured dish and guess which restaurant makes it. Ted Przybylo, one of the siblings who runs the banquet hall and restaurant their parents brought to Niles in 1967, showcased the golabki (pronounced go-wahmb-kee), or stuffed cabbage rolls. They're stuffed with a seasoned pork and rice mixture and served with a tomato-based sauce, said Ted, a graduate of Kendall College's Culinary Arts School. Stay informed. A proposal for a Tilted Kilt bar, which has waitresses in bare-midriff, low-cut costumes, is being discussed. Learn the history, vote in our poll on whether you approve.
If a bar that features sexily-dressed waitresses opens in Morton Grove, is that good for keeping the village's taxes lower or bad for its character as a family-friendly community? Even before developer Ted Mavrakis, who owns the property on Dempster Street just east of Lincoln Avenue (site of the former Maxwell's Restaurant), has firmed up plans for a proposal to open a Tilted Kilt bar-restaurant, residents are debating the idea. "I don't believe he's made up his mind yet (on whether to proceed with the Tilted Kilt idea)," said Ted Pirpiris, business manager of Mavrakis' Imagine Properties in Evanston. "We're working on a couple of other deals so it's a lower priority at this point." Earlier: Morton Grove embarks on Dempster-Waukegan …

The incentive plan will permit development of the area around the intersection, chiefly Prairie View Plaza and old Produce World location.
It's official. After a unanimous vote Monday, Morton Grove trustees approved the plan that they hope will renew the area at Dempster Street and Waukegan Road. Prairie View Plaza, the shopping center at the southeast corner of the intersection, has lost tenants over the past few years, and its parking lot pavement is crumbling in places. For that reason, the village of Morton Grove has spent months exploring the idea of establishing a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district there. In a TIF plan, a municipality invests in infrastructure, and then plans to recoup its investment when the renewed properties generate higher property taxes. The TIF plan encountered some oppositiion from residents concerned that it would diminish revenue for …

Meg Schmitz of Morton Grove races cars for fun, and is driven to help others succeed in business by sharing her experience with franchises.
When her husband went to an expo, bought a franchise business and encountered trouble, Meg Schmitz jumped in, turned it around and soon had a mini-empire of five franchise stores. Now the Morton Grove businesswoman plays matchmaker in a business called FranChoice, pairing up budding entrepreneurs with franchisers, using her knowledge of the individual and the company to create a partnership that works. For someone who can follow a playbook--or recipe--well and has ambition, she says franchising can be financially rewarding. Schmitz recently met up with Niles Patch with her dog, whom she calls her "road sister," riding in the back of her black BMW. When she's not working hard, she's playing hard, driving the vehicle in Windy City BMW Club…

Before any more anti-LAF rants begin, mostly by people who don't work out there, I want to say what a great health club it is and what a positive difference it is making in people's lives in this community. Every age and nationality is there, doing what they can to stay healthy. I'd hate to see the baby thrown out with the bath water: that huge track, the pool, the equipment, the fitness studios …   more ›
