People who came to an Open House Tuesday to give input on a sustainability plan-in-the-making thought the suggestions on water conservation, recycling, open space, transportation, etc., were forward-thinking.
Looking at a poster that described how Niles could step up its recycling efforts, Michael Magdongon approved. "So far I really like everything," said Magdongon, of Niles, who is majoring in sustainability at Roosevelt University. "Niles is trying to raise awareness and bring sustainability to the community." He was looking at posters of Niles' Environmental Action Plan, which is in development. One noted that the Niles community only recycles 19.5 percent of its trash, lower than the national average of 34 percent; it had ideas for increasing the level of recycling. Residents, businesses, etc. are invited to talk about ideas for environmental sustainability in Niles--and think big.
If you've always wanted to see solar power, or LEED-certified buildings, or (name your dream environmental goal here) in Niles, the village wants to hear from you. The recently-approved Niles 2030 Comprehensive Plan called for environmental sustainability, but it didn't really spell out what that means, said Steve Vinezeano, assistant village manager. The village is creating an Environmental Action Plan to fulfill that goal, and residents, businesses, developers and others interested are invited to come to a meeting tonight to envision ideas for doing that. Ideas could include tree canopy, energy-efficient buildings, increased rates of recycling, additional options for transit, biking and walking, etc. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for…

I'm sorry but this program sounds like a total bureaucratic ploy. If I lived in Niles I would be upset that my tax money was going to this. Good Luck.   more ›
