Will Sale of Jewel-Osco Affect Local Stores?

With four Jewel-Osco stores in Niles and others in Park Ridge, Des Plaines and Skokie, experts say the retail chain needs to be revamped.

  Retail experts say Jewel-Osco, which parent company Supervalu sold to a group led by Cerberus Capital Management, according to wgntv.com, may be sold again in a relatively short time period, Crain's Chicago Business reported.  Experts also said Jewel-Osco leadership will have to re-examine its pricing strategy to compete with Wal-Mart Inc. and other independent stores. The chain also has not figured out how to successfully draw in ethnic shoppers, Crain's commented.  While Jewel-Osco has not performed well in the face of competition from big box stores and even dollar stores, which do not pay employees union wages, other full-line supermarkets, such as Krogers, have perfomed better, according to nbcchicago.com.  Jewel has four stores in …

Susan The ladies who work at Jewel are so incredibly nice. I enjoy talking to them always. Jewel is a nice store, with some good buys. Of course there is stiff competition - if you want to drive a lot, but that is your choice of how to use your time. Walmart is the biggest gun selling store, something to think about! Susan   more ›
