Artist Leads Workshop on Filipino Christmas Traditions

Class on making parols lets participants share in their homeland holiday spirit in Niles.

The leaves were still bright with fall colors when about 50 people gathered at St. John Brebeuf Parish in Niles on a recent Sunday to learn how to make parols, a kind of lantern that has been a Filipino symbol of Christmas for centuries. "Here, it seems early to be thinking about Christmas," said Fred DeAsis, a Filipino-American artist who was leading his fifth annual workshop. "In the Philippines, it starts in September and some people extend it to January." Participants shared Filipino food and listened to Christmas carols in the Tagalog language while DeAsis explained the symbolism of parols, which are star-shaped frames covered with rice paper or tissue paper, trailing long, decorative tails.
