Update: Schakowsky Blasts Health Care Vote

Congresswoman likes the law as it is while Dold thinks change is necessary.

(Update, 6:40 p.m.) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) criticized what she called the 33rd effort of the House Republican majority to repeal all or part of the Affordable Care Act after today’s vote to eliminate the law. She thinks the time should be devoted to job creation. “Though Republicans took control of the House with the promise that they will focus on jobs, they have wasted more than 43 hours of floor time on legislation to repeal Obamacare,” Schakowsky said. Schakowsky likes the health care law as it is. She praises how it has already helped millions of Americans by eliminating caps on their insurance, allowing children under 16 to remain on their parents’ policies and insuring care for youngsters with pre-existing conditions. “I …

Schakowsky Calls Shooting 'Shocking'; Congress Looks At Security

Meeting Wednesday concerns protecting Congressional representatives.

Ranking Democratic U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky joined a bipartisan chorus of condemnation against the "terrible act of violence" directed toward her House colleague, Gabrielle Giffords, Giffords' staff and several Arizona constituents. A Wednesday meeting in Washington will address security for all congressional representatives.  "Congresswoman Giffords conducts herself in a dignified, civil manner and with a kind demeanor, making it particularly shocking that she would be the target of such violence," Schakowsky said in a statement issued Saturday evening. Schakowsky, who represents Illinois' 9th Congressional District that includes Niles, said she was "horrified" of the news and is praying for the "full recovery" of her fellow Democrat, who…

Lies About the DREAM Act and the Congressmen Who Told Them

A review of the debates prior to last week's vote.

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2010 passed in the U.S. House of Representatives last Wednesday on a narrow margin of 216-198. For those of us who were glued to our televisions, computers or mobile devices watching the live debate on C-SPAN, the passionate pleas from those supporting the bill and the equally passionate doomsday warnings by those opposed to it were very compelling.  How exciting it was to watch democracy in action! Now that video and official congressional transcripts from that day have been made available to the general public, however, it seems that the actions and words by our members of Congress that day were less about democracy and more about political trickery, outright lies and…

DREAM Act To Help Some Students, Hurt Many Others

Controversial bill would require U.S. citizens and legal residents to compete with illegal immigrants for financial aid benefits

As high school seniors prepare to submit their college applications, parents across the country are becoming increasingly concerned about how they will afford the skyrocketing price of college tuition and related fees. Just this year for instance, the University of Illinois raised their tuition rates by 9.5 percent and their fees by an additional 3.2 percent. Conversely, due to budget deficits, approximately 100,000  Illinois students lost up to $4,500 each in state educational grants for the 2010-11 academic year. In the past, parents and students relied on federal and state financial aid resources to help them cover college tuition, fees and expenses.  Beginning January 2011, however, students who are U.S. citizens and legal permanent …
