President Barack Obama proposed Tuesday night a "Fix It First" program to address the nation's crumbling infrastructure—like roads and bridges—in an effort to improve citizens' quality of life and bring jobs to the United States. There are nearly 70,000 "structurally deficient" bridges throughout the United States that require "significant maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement," according to the Transportation for America website. In Illinois, 8.5 percent of the state's bridges are "structurally deficient." The state is ranked 35th worst nationally for the overall quality of its bridges, according to the Transportation for America website. Work on water main relocation should be completed by early-December.
Lehigh Avenue in Morton Grove could be closed due to a water main being relocated, as reported by the Morton Grove Champion. Morton Grove Board of Trustees approved a $346,966 contract with Deerfield-based Bolder Contractors to complete the work. The company will relocate a nearly 60-year-old, 20-inch feeder main from the north water tower near Dempster Street and National Avenue. Currently the water main is sandwiched in between two homes due to development in the area, making access difficult, said Public Works Director Andy DeMonte, according to the Champion. A redevelopment plan is shaping up with an end date in sight.
With work on Dempster Street inching past the one-year mark, many citizens and business owners have grown curious as to the actual amount of progress being made. Morton Grove Village Engineer Chris Tomich was among the first to speak up Thursday's Dempster Street Construction informational meeting, and for good reason. “We're in year two of a construction project that was supposed [to be finished in] year one," Tomich said. Tomich said the redevelopment project, designed to give Dempster Street a facelift between Ferris Avenue and Central Avenue, is continuing at a comfortable pace.
