Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced that all Cook County residents can receive a $40 discount on their pet's spay or neuter procedure during February. Pet owners can take their animal to the veterinarian of their choice, and must present proof of a current rabies vaccine. The rebate is provided for up to two pets. Preckwinckle says spaying and neutering is good for the pet and the community. “The procedure not only helps your pet live a longer, healthier life, it benefits the community because it reduces the number of strays and unwanted animals in our neighborhoods. Republican incumbent fends off pair of challengers.

The incumbent Republican chalked up Tuesday's victory to his opposition of new taxes, a "community-oriented response to local issues," backing from multiple unions and editorial endorsments from the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. "We had a very broad list of people behind us," he said. "You put them all together and it helps." Silvestri cruised to victory in the suburbs. He won 64 percent of the vote. The race in the city was much closer, however. Silvestri won about 47 percent of the vote, while Capparelli won about…

All three hopefuls put the economy and county taxes on the top of their lists, as well as continuing the progress that has been made in quelling political hiring. Following, in alphabetical order, are the candidates' views and background. Linda Thompson LaFianza has been the Evanston Township Republican Committeeman for five years, and is looking to give back to the community while changing what she calls the "business as usual" attitude of Cook County government. "I think Cook County is suffering …
