High School Playoff Roundup: Vikings and Wolves Honored in CSL

Niles North and Niles West had athletes honored on the all-conference football and soccer teams.

Football: After playing in a reserve role to Sam Sharples last season, RB Oshayne Brown emerged to become a big-time offensive force for Niles North in 2011. Brown was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the CSL North. In addition to Brown, Niles North DT Dan Fricano, LB Romeo Montrel, DT James Edmond and LB Juvane Spence made the all-conference team. Edmond, a sophomore, along with juniors Fricano and Spence will anchor the Vikings’ defense next year. Niles West’s Jeremiah Jordan and LB James Williams were both named to the CSL South All-Conference team. Both juniors will return to play for the Wolves next season. Girls Swimming: Sophomore Edan Scott took third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.29 seconds) and 100 free (53.64), the best…

The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6: Alexis Melchiorre, senior, girls swimming, Deerfield – Melchiorre helped lead Deerfield to a third consecutive Central Suburban League North swimming championship last weekend. The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win. Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend. Later completed the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds.The …

Boys golf prepares for the postseason while cross country got in one of its last races before regionals.

Girls Volleyball: Niles West swept through the Northside Prep Tournament for the second year in a row, winning the mid-season invitational with a 25-14, 25-9 victory over Jones. Sophomore Olivia Rusek was named the tournament MVP and Milena Zalloni was also honored on the all-tournament team. Rusek had eight kills in the Wolves’ championship win. Niles West didn’t lose a set during the entire tournament, beating Jones, Brooks and Simeon in pool play. They defeated Curie in the semifinals to set up a rematch with Jones in the finals. Niles North finished in third place in the tournament. Fresh off its tournament title, Niles West fell to Evanston 24-26, 25-12, 25-11 on Sept. 27. Vikings Sports Roundup: Cross-Country Sweeps CSL North Quad Meet

Volleyball rebounds after a tough weekend tournament while football lost to the state's top team.

Girls Tennis: The Vikings went 1-2 last week, beating Maine West, but losing to Maine South and Deerfield. Senior captain Erica Markovitz continues to the lead Vikings, going 2-1 on the week. “Erica is playing her smartest tennis this year,” Niles North coach John Amaro said. “Her willingness to battle has always been high, now she is analyzing her opponents well, and it is paying off.” Markovitz lost to Deerfield 6-2, 6-2, but gave up a total of three games in her two victories over Maine South and Maine West. Rebekkah Fornalewski went 2-0 on the week with wins against Maine South and Maine West. “(Rebekkah) is a terrific contributor at singles and doubles,” Amaro said. “Her skills allow me a lot of flexibility to put her at singles or …

Niles West Sports Roundup: Boys Golf Rides Early-Season Hot Streak

Volleyball won the Skokie Skirmish while football put themselves in position for a playoff spot.

Boys Golf: Early in the season, Niles West continues to pile up the golf accolades. The Wolves won two CSL South dual matches early last week and followed it up with a ninth-place finish at the Zion-Benton Invitational. Nick Hester has had a number of stellar rounds for the Wolves, taking medalist honors in Niles West’s victories over Evanston and Maine South. Hester shot 36 in Niles West’s 158-166 win over Evanston and fired a 33 in the Wolves’ 139-150 win against Maine South a day later. Both matches were held at Willow Hill. Niles West shot 327 as a team in the Zion-Benton Invitational at Shepard’s Crook, only 10 shots off of a top-five finish. Maine South Sports Roundup: Volleyball Adopts New Philosophy in New Season

Cross country runner Emily Leonard paced Maine South with a four-place finish at the Harvey Braus Invitational.

Sebastian Acevedo may be starting his second season as Maine South’s volleyball coach, but he considers this the first real opportunity to put his stamp on a program that has historically struggled in the CSL South. “Last year it took about half a season to get to know me, get to trust me and learn the new offense and what we’re looking for,” Acevedo said. Not only did Maine South have to adjust to a new system and longer practices, but to a new coaching philosophy. Acevedo says he wants his players to focus on themselves, using mistakes as an opportunity to make corrections. In being more accepting of mistakes that happen during practice and in matches, Acevedo hopes his team plays looser and becomes more coachable. “I’m very hard to play…
