Skokie native and Niles West High School graduate Peter Michaels was found dead in a wooded area in Antioch on Jan. 10. Authorities are now saying Michaels died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Peter Michaels died at the young age of 44. The Skokie native became a sergeant with the Waukegan Police Department shortly after graduating Niles West High School in 1987. On Jan. 10, however, Michaels was found dead in a wooded area in Antioch, or just off North Avenue and Trevor Road. The officer had been missing for several days and a search team of about 120 people looked for Michaels on Thursday. After finding the body, authorities determined that no foul play occurred. Now, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said Michaels died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Lake County Journal. No one is sure when Luis M. Escalante died. His body was found underneath a bridge at the northeast corner of Oakton Street and McCormick Boulevard on Saturday.
No one is sure when Luis M. Escalante died. His body was found underneath a bridge at the northeast corner of Oakton Street and McCormick Boulevard just two days before Christmas Eve. A look underneath the bridge shows several pieces of cardboard laid out over large rocks. A barrel appears to have been used as a table. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Escalante was only 53. An officer found Escalante while on patrol. According to the report, Escalante’s leg was hanging from a steel support beam. When police approached the body, it was clear that Escalante had been deceased for some time. Police tried to reach him, but flames were too hot.
David Wayne Gooding, 46, of Park Ridge, died Wednesday night inside a car in a fire that he may have set himself, according to the Pioneer Press. Park Ridge police said their preliminary indication was that the blaze was potentially self-inflicted. Police were the first responders on the scene of the car blaze, at 100 N. Aldine Street, Park Ridge, a residential area just north of Touhy and west of Greenwood. Gooding lived in the 500 block of South Warren in Park Ridge. When police arrived, the car was engulfed in flames. Police tried to rescue Gooding, who was laying on the ground outside the car at that point, but were unable to reach him because of the heat of the blaze.
