13 Des Plaines Cops to Face Consequences for Traffic Enforcement Grant Probe

Discipline includes suspensions, restitution.

  The Des Plaines Police Department announced today that 13 police officers face disciplinary action based on the outcome of the internal investigation into how federal and state traffic enforcement grant funds were used.   The investigation found that 13 officers (12 assigned to Patrol Division, one in Detective Division), were in violation of several Des Plaines Police Department rules and regulations.  Notably, officers were cited for violations that included “conduct unbecoming,” “knowledge of laws and regulations,” “obedience of laws and regulations,” “reporting violations of laws, ordinances, rules or orders,” “obedience of an unlawful order,” and “truthfulness.” The 13 officers face suspensions ranging in length from seven to 60 …

Des Plaines Police Commander Charged with Falsifying Records

A former Des Plaines police commander faces one felony count after the city’s investigation into information that was provided by the department to obtain grant funding for overtime, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Wednesday.

Evanston Police: Man Duct-Taped Couple, Stole Paintings Stolen paintings found in a Morton Grove consignment shop led Evanston detectives to arrest and charge a Glenview man in connection with a home invasion that took place in Evanston in April 2012.  Michael Karabatsis, 51, of the 600 block of Pfingsten Road in Glenview, was arrested and charged with home invasion, a felony, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Police believe Karabatsis was one of three men who knocked on the door of a home in the 2200 block of Central Street on Friday, April 13, claiming they had a delivery. Lawsuit: Hazing, Sexual Assault of 14-Year-Old Boy at Maine West

The mother of a Maine West High School student filed a complaint with the Circuit Court of Cook County alleging hazing at Maine Township High School District 207.

The parents of a Maine West High School student filed a lawsuit on Nov. 19 that accuses the school district, faculty and staff of allowing their son to be physically and sexually assaulted as part of a known hazing ritual for the boys' varsity soccer team. The hazing ritual was ordered and witnessed by several coaches, according to the complaint, when, on Sept. 27, Michael Divencenzo, varsity soccer coach, Emilio Rodriguez, freshmen soccer coach, and other coaches ordered a “campus run” after the freshman soccer player was promoted to the varsity squad. Police: ‘Elmer Fudd Bandit’ Arrested

Law enforcement reported they believe a man they arrested in connection with a bank robbery in Kentucky is the same man who robbed several other Chicago-area banks in October.

Law enforcement reported they believe they arrested a man is responsible for five armed bank robberies, and an attempted armed bank robbery in Des Plaines, in Kentucky. Todd Berkley, 39, dubbed the “Elmer Fudd Bandit” by the FBI due to the flannel shirts and caps seen on a male suspect in surveillance video, was arrested at an apartment building by Kentucky State Police and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department on Nov. 2, the Grayson County News Gazette reported. Buffalo Grove Two Former Police Officers Charged in Murder, Extortion Plot A Buffalo Grove resident was one of two former police officers charged Oct. 26 with attempted extortion and conspiracy to commit extortion. Federal investigators said Steven Mandell, 61, was involved in an alleged plot to abduct, extort, murder and dismember a victim whom he believed had access to large amounts of cash generated from commercial real estate holdings. Also charged was Gary Engel, 61, of Homer Glen. Remains of Man Thought to Be Gacy Victim Found in Utah

Though Daniel Raymond Noe fit the profile of other Gacy victims, he was not one, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Another missing person’s case has been solved as a result of efforts by law enforcement related to the John Wayne Gacy case, Cook County police announced on Thursday. The remains of an Illinois man once believed to be a possible victim of Gacy were discovered by hikers on a mountainside in Utah, solving a missing person case more than 30 years after the man disappeared. No signs of foul play were found, police stated. Daniel Raymond Noe, a surveyor and factory worker from Peoria, was 21 years old in 1977 when he moved to Bellingham, Washington for work, according to police. Mount Prospect Man Killed in Elmhurst Road Crash

A 2003 Cadillac side-swiped a Pace bus, struck a guard rail and crashed into a truck on Friday morning, according to Des Plaines police.

A Mount Prospect man was killed this morning after police reported he crashed into a Pace bus and tractor trailer on Friday morning, Des Plaines police stated on Friday. The man was driving his 2003 Cadillac southbound on Elmhurst Road at Oakton Street in the outside lane when he veered off the road and sideswiped a Pace bus that was stopped to pick up passengers on Elmhurst Road, south of Oakton Street at 6:25 a.m. The man’s vehicle continued southbound on Elmhurst Road after swiping the bus, crossed to the east side of Elmhurst Road and struck a guard rail. Woman Found Dead in Front of Police Station

Police: No foul play suspected.

A woman was discovered on the sidewalk in front of the Des Plaines police station by a passer-by Tuesday morning, TribLocal reported. Donna Cinelli, 49, of Des Plaines, was pronounced dead at the scene, and police stated no foul play was suspected. Des Plaines Police stated they believe Cinelli had health problems. Commander Nick Treantafeles said police do not know how Cinelli ended up on the sidewalk, nor do they know how long she was lying there before she was found. “We’re not going to investigate this case because there was nothing suspicious or unusual about it,” Treantafeles said.
