On what may be the biggest drinking "holiday" of the year, Cook County announces a new plan for roadside DUI death memorials.
The night before Thanksgiving is known as the biggest party night of the year. Almost a holiday unto itself with a name of its own, Black Wednesday is a night to rival New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day for overindulgence in alcohol. In many communities, extra officers will be on patrol and local officials warn bar owners not to overserve their patrons. So it's not a coincidence that Cook County this week announced a new DUI Memorial Program. For $150, families of anyone killed in a DUI fatality can purchase a roadside memorial marker to be placed alongside any highway under the county's jurisdiction. The marker includes a “Please Don’t Drink and Drive” sign and an optional commemorative plaque with the deceased loved one’s name and …

Iurri Iachminskyi, 23, of West School Street, Chicago, was charged with DUI Nov. 5 just before 4 a.m. Just before 3:30 a.m., Niles police were investigating a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Howard Street and Lehigh. A black BMW X-5 was on top of the railroad tracks south of Howard Street, facing eastbound. Iachminskyi was standing outside the vehicle and had glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol on his breath, police said. When police asked him about the circumstances, he said, "I missed my turn," according to the report. Brian Hildreth of Niles was charged with DUI after an incident Sunday Aug. 26 just before 3 a.m. when a Niles police officer observed his vehicle heading south on Milwaukee Avenue with sparks and flames coming from the wheel area. Police said the vehicle had no tires and the sparks were coming from metal grinding on the roadway. Police attempted to stop Hildreth, but they said he failed to stop, continuing to his home in the 6400 block of Riverview. As he exited his car, police said he had to hold onto the door for support. Kyle Goette, 45, of Des Plaines, was charged with DUI after his car veered off Oakton Street, in the 8300 block, and struck a fence just after 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. Two witnesses pointed out Goette, who was standing on the sidewalk, to the police officer who responded. According to police, when the officer approached Goette, he said he didn't know what had happened. The officer observed the odor of alcohol on the suspect's breath, and he showed impairment on field sobriety tests.
