The man was on the 14th fairway at the Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois when the earth below him gave way and sent him 18 feet deep into the earth, the Belleville News Democrat reports.
A Missouri man is lucky to be alive after being swallowed by a sinkhole as he stood on the 14th fairway at a golf course in southwestern Illinois Friday, the Belleville News Democrat reports. Mark Mihal was reportedly rescued by the men he was golfing with after they lowered a rope into the 18 foot hole he fell down to hoist him up, the Belleville News Democrat reports. The man suffered a shoulder injury.

NILES NORTH Volleyball: The Vikings rallied to beat Deerfield at home on Oct. 13 19-25, 25-20, 25-14. Girls Volleyball: Niles West swept through the Northside Prep Tournament for the second year in a row, winning the mid-season invitational with a 25-14, 25-9 victory over Jones. Sophomore Olivia Rusek was named the tournament MVP and Milena Zalloni was also honored on the all-tournament team. Rusek had eight kills in the Wolves’ championship win. Niles West didn’t lose a set during the entire tournament, beating Jones, Brooks and Simeon in pool play. They defeated Curie in the semifinals to set up a rematch with Jones in the finals. Football cruised in its last non-conference game while girls tennis swept CSL South rival Evanston.
Girls Volleyball: With five straight victories, Maine South won the Maine East Demon Invitational on Sept. 16-17. Maine South defeated Addison Trail and Normal West in two tight matches to advance into the championship bracket. The Hawks dispatched of South Elgin in the quarterfinals 25-17, 25-20 before facing off against Lake Forest for the right to go to the championship. After cruising in the first game, Maine South dropped its first – and only – game of the tournament, but rallied to take game three by a score of 25-22. In the championship game, the Hawks took down Trinity 25-14, 25-18. Earlier in the week, Maine South lost to CSL South rival Glenbrook South 26-24, 25-23. The Hawks are now 14-4 on the season. Girls Tennis: The Vikings went 1-2 last week, beating Maine West, but losing to Maine South and Deerfield. Senior captain Erica Markovitz continues to the lead Vikings, going 2-1 on the week. “Erica is playing her smartest tennis this year,” Niles North coach John Amaro said. “Her willingness to battle has always been high, now she is analyzing her opponents well, and it is paying off.” Markovitz lost to Deerfield 6-2, 6-2, but gave up a total of three games in her two victories over Maine South and Maine West. Boys Golf: Niles West split its two dual matches last week, defeating Waukegan before losing to CSL South rival New Trier. Nate Lee took home medalist honors, shooting a 37 in the Wolves’ 161-176 win against Waukegan. But Niles West couldn’t hang with New Trier, losing 152-166. The Wolves finished 14th in the 25-team Chevy Chase Invitational on Sept. 17. The Wolves shot 340, beating fellow CSL South teams Evanston (344) and Maine South (353).
