Several athletes from Niles West, Niles North and Northridge Prep competed in the meet last weekend.
Several Niles-area gymnasts competed in the Illinois High School Association state meet this weekend at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfurt. Niles West freshman Nomondalai Jamiyankhuu was the stand-out, with a 12th place all-around finish. Jamiyankhuu also placed in the floor exercise, pommel horse, vault, parallel and horizontal bars, according to the IHSA website. Congratulations to Maine South High School's Haleigh Sir. The senior gymnast has qualified for the state finals. Sir qualified for the state meet at Feb. 4’s sectional at Fremd High School, placing 29th in the floor exercise, according to the Illinois State Gymnastics Stats website. She will compete in the floor exercise at the state meet on Feb. 15 and 16 at Palatine High School.

And it's only the third year for the program, for girls ages 8 to 13. The program is based at Niles North High School.
In mid-April, the Viking Gymnastics Clubs Girls’ Team competed fabulously in the AAU State Meet in Loves Park, IL. In addition to the many individual medals the girls received, their Level 5 competitors finished third place out of 18 teams and their Level 6 team took fourth place! This is a great achievement, especially because Viking Gymnastics is such a new club; this is only their third year competing AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) and their first year competing USAG (United States of America Gymnastics). More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. Niles West's girls basketball team lost its first game of the season and both gymnastics teams are starting off their season.
Just like last year, Niles West swept Niles North in the Crosstown Classic with both the boys and girls basketball teams recording victories. In the boys game, Niles West edged the Vikings 60-57 at home thanks to a 13-5 run late in the fourth quarter. Ahmad Gibson had 15 points to lead Niles West while Malachi Nix had a game-high 25 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. On the girls side things were a little less dramatic. Jewell Loyd scored 39 points and Niles West outpaced the Vikings 49-38. Niles West came back from a nine-point deficit at halftime as Loyd put up 26 points in the second half. Almost 1,000 votes were cast in last week's poll and Evanston's Josh Irving came out on top. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 5- Dec. 11: Michael Alfieri, sophomore, boys basketball, Deerfield – Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 overtime win. Mark Johnson, senior, basketball forward, Glenbrook North – Johnson had a career-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds in the Spartans’ 67-39 victory over Niles North last week.
