Homeless Issue Central to Oakton’s ‘Shantytown’

Oakton Community College students camped out in shanties on the Des Plaines campus to bring attention to the issues surrounding homelessness, and to raise funds for the college’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity, on Nov. 27.

Creature comforts were at a minimum for 20 to 30 students at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines on Tuesday night as the group camped out in the campus courtyard in handmade shanties. The group braved the chilly weather and hard concrete in cardboard boxes and tents to increase awareness about homelessness and to raise funds for Oakton’s student-run chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Sahil Pruthi, treasurer for the group and co-project manager for the event, said the purpose of the second annual Shantytown project was to advocate and educate on the issue of homelessness. Library Employee Builds Homes in El Salvador

Karina Guico tells Morton Grove Public Library audience about her experience volunteering for Habitat For Humanity.

If you've been in the Baxter Room at the Morton Grove Public Library lately, you may have admired the photographs on display. They were taken by Karina Guico during the week she spent in El Salvador building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Guico, when she's not building homes, works as a programming assistant at the Morton Grove Public Library. In November Guico discussed her trip to El Salvador with library patrons.   Her trip this past August was the second time Guico volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. As a senior at Good Counsel High School, Guico spent her spring break in South Carolina building homes. "Back then getting a tan for prom was the primary reason I went," she said.
