The Pirate Carrying a Mermaid Optical Illusion has been named Patch's Halloween Costume in America. Its creator -- and wearer -- will receive a $5,000 prize for having the most creative and innovative costume.

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize. It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." The Dark Knight rises as well as political figures will be popular this year but plan to see plenty of classic Halloween costumes as well.
Americans will spend nearly $3 billion on Halloween costumes this year, and the majority of them will dress as witches, vampires, princesses and in other traditional Halloween attire. The National Retail Federation’s 2012 Top Halloween Costumes survey reports that 10 percent of kids plan to dress as a princess, while six million adults plan to go as a witch. Batman is the second most popular Halloween costume for kids, while the character — along with other characters from The Dark Knight Rises — is fourth for adults. Some people plan to turn to current events as inspiration for their Halloween costume, whether it’s an athlete, political figure or something else entirely. According to 'Crain's Chicago Business,' adults from both towns spent a combined $97,779 on Halloween costumes last year.
Americans spent $512.1 million on adult Halloween costumes last year. Yes, you read that correctly. That number comes from Crain's Chicago Business and its recently released map showing spending on adult costumes for Halloween in 2011. Adults spent over $100 million more on their own costumes than on childrens'. According to Crain's, Niles adults spent about $49,617 on their costumes. Morton Grove spent about $48,162. Morton Grove family-owned costume shop turns 35 this year.
It is a late afternoon on a Friday and the Magical Mystery Tour buzzes with activities, as shoppers crowd the Morton Grove costume shop looking for good deals for the three-day Halloween weekend. Owner Randy Israel and his crew try to keep up with the influx of people already lining up at the cashier and huddling around the fitting area at the back of the store.
