Identity Stolen From Deceased Person

Someone tried to get the Social Security payments after the person died. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

  A bank's loss prevention specialist reported Oct. 23 that a bank customer, who passed away in May 2012, had received automatic Social Security payments of $2,109 in June and July in his account. There was no co-signer or beneficiary on the account. The bank, in the 7700 block of Waukegan Road, notified the Social Security Administration and made plans to return the funds to that agency.  On July 23, someone used the deceased’s personal information to change the PIN number on the account. The Loss Prevention Specialist stated someone in the deceased's family might have the personal information needed to change the PIN number.   ARRESTS  Victor Rodriguez, 23, of Northfield, was stopped for traffic violations Oct. 22, police said, and charged with possession of cannabis and no valid driver's license. Barnes & Noble Card Readers Hacked; Skokie OK

Hackers stole credit card date from 63 stores around the country by hacking into PIN pads. The Barnes & Noble stores in Evanston, Deer Park and Deerfield had breached data.

  The Barnes & Noble store at 1630 Sherman Ave. in Evanston was among 63 stores around the country where credit card data stored on PIN pads was hacked, according to the company.  Barnes & Noble released a list of stores where data was breached on Tuesday; other stores in Illinois include two in Chicago, one in Crystal Lake, on in Deer Park, one in Deerfield and one in West Dundee. In Skokie, the Old Orchard store and the Village Crossing store (Village Crossing is half in Skokie and half in Niles) were not on the list. Identity Theft Of $4,900 On Man's Credit Card

He received a letter in the mail congratulating him on opening a new account. An arrest is merely an accusation and does not indicate a conviction.

    A 49-year-old Niles man who lives in the 9200 block of Callero reported on Sept. 25 he received a letter from HSBC Credit Corporation congratulating him for opening a new credit card with a big box retail electronics store, and that he was being notified to expect his new credit card in the mail. After he called the ompany, he learned that a new credit account had been open in Merrillville, Ind. and purchases in the amount of $4,900 USC had been made. The victim will contact the three major credit reporting agencies. Report only at this time. Information is taken from Niles Police Department reports.

ID Thief Prevents Man From Getting Tax Return

  A 36-year-old man of the 8400 block of Peter Terrace filed his tax return in May and was anticipating receiving a tax return check. When he did not receive it, he contacted the IRS. An IRS representative told him a second tax return had been filed in his name. Upon reporting this to police Aug. 22 just after 1:30 p.m., which they told him it was an apparent case of identity theft. The IRS told him he would need to file a report to follow up.  Woman stopped for DUI, police say Sang Lee of Wheeling was charged with DUI on Aug. 18 just before 1 a.m. after police stopped her in the 9700 block of Milwaukee Avenue. Man Placed Skimmer In Bank's ATM, Police Charge

  Bogdan Serghite, 26, was charged with identity theft, a Class 3 felony, and Catalin Pencic, 36, was charged with knowingly damaging property after a May 8 incident at and near a financial institution in the 8200 block of Golf Road. Both men live at the same address in the 2500 block of West Estes Street, Chicago. The fraud division of the financial institution tipped off Niles police that a skimming device had been installed on an ATM machine, and conducted surveillance. Two men walked near the area, Serghite entered the bank and the financial institution team alerted police the skimming device was being removed, according to police. 70-Inch TV Bought With ID Theft

Clerk suspected driver's license wasn't valid. Arrest information is supplied by the Niles Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

David Evans, 47, of South Winchester Ave., Chicago, was charaged with felony identity theft, felony forgery and obstruction of justice on Tuesday just after 6 p.m. when a security agent for a store at Golf Mill Shopping Center stated Evans had just bought a TV by applying for a credit card with a fraudulent driver's license, according to police. Police said they learned from the security agent and a sales clerk that Evans had earlier tried to open a store credit card with a fraudulent Wisconsin driver's license and social security number and a Naperville address that is the real address of the victim. Evans then purchased the 70-inch TV and a $200 gift card for a total transaction value of $2,320.35, according to the report. Police spoke …

Death Investigation Yields Partly Decomposed Body

Building engineer had not seen a tenant in more than 30 days.

Police responded to a well-being check for Paul Fordonski, 70, on Oct. 28 at 10:50 a.m. at his apartment in the 9100 block of Terrace Drive, Niles. The building engineer said he had not seen Fordonski in more than 30 days. Police officers said they smelled a foul odor that got stronger as they neared the apartment, and they entered through an open window. They said the home was in horrendous condition and poorly kept. They found Fordonski's body laying in a bathroom face down, with no signs of visible injury, and said the body was in a long-period timeframe of decomposition. After Online Dispute, Driver Tries To Hit Man On Road

Two men were supposed to meet and discuss remarks but things got out of hand.

Niles police went to a parking lot in the 7200 block of Dempster Street after they received a call about 1:45 a.m. June 10 about criminal damage to an auto. According to the police report, the incident was an escalation of a dispute between two men, who were supposed to meet that day to discuss comments made over the Internet. The victim told police that the offender had made remarks about the victim's father's medical condition on a website called thedirty.com. He also accused the offender of harassing a female friend, who was not present, through text messages and phone calls.
