The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 14- Nov. 20 are: Brittany Collins, sophomore, basketball center, Maine West – The 6-foot center isn’t planning on having any sophomore slumps in her second varsity basketball season as she scored a game-high 20 points in Maine West’s season-opening 55-35 loss to Palatine on Nov. 14. The Warriors will host their Tip-Off Classic tournament later this week. After falling behind by four points late in the fourth quarter, the Wolves rallied and will face Maine South on Friday.
Niles West guard Ramsan Younatham wasn’t having his greatest game by any measure. He’d knocked down only one three-pointer and passed up a number of open shots late in the game. But with his team trailing in the fourth quarter, the senior guard knew if his shot was there he had to take it. Younatham got the opportunity and came through, knocking down a three-pointer from the right wing to put Niles West up by one point, 43-42, with 27 seconds left. Hawks beat Loyola Academy on Saturday in a heartstopping game that many called one of the best victories in school history.
The Maine South Hawks will go to the finals for the third consecutive year, playing Mt. Carmel for the 8A state championship Saturday, Nov. 27, in Champaign.
