Quote Contest Held for Maine South's 50th Anniversary

The school is holding the contest to mark the milestone in the 2013-2014 school year.

  Do you have what it takes to create the Maine South High School 50th Anniversary slogan? The high school is hosting a contest among parents, students and staff to see who can come up with the best quote for the occasion to be marked in the 2013-2014 school year, the Park Ridge Herald-Advocate reports. The contest has already gained interest in the community with 40 quotes submitted. Those interested in entering the contest should head to Maine South’s website. All entries must be submitted by Sunday, the newspaper reports.

Former Maine West, South Teacher Sues School District

Jannon Kirley's lawsuit claims she was almost run over by a car driven by the superintendent of schools, the Daily Herald reports.

  A lawsuit has been filed against Maine Township High School District 207 by a former physical education teacher, the Daily Herald reports. Jannon Kirley, former teacher at Maine West and South, is suing the district for employment discrimination, age discrimination, retaliation for exercising her First Amendment right to free speech, and for retaliatory discharge under the Illinois Whistleblower’s Act. The school district has responded, saying Kirley’s dismissal from the district “involved insubordinate, unprofessional conduct” toward District 207 staff and students, the newspaper reports.

Maine South Boys' Basketball Wins Central Suburban League Title

The team won Wednesday's game in double-overtime.

  The Maine South boys’ basketball team beat Niles North Wednesday to clinch the Central Suburban League title, the Niles Herald-Spectator reports. The Hawks came out on top over the Vikings with a 64-61 win in double-overtime play. Maine South’s top scorer was senior Danny Quinn with 9 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists, the newspaper reports. 

Maine South Fine Arts Department Presents "The King Stag"

The high school's winter play will take place at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21-23 at Watson Auditorium.

  The Maine South High School Fine Arts Department will bring the play "The King Stag" to life this weekend at Watson Auditorium. The play takes place in the Oriental kingdom of Serendippo and the forest of Miracoli where King Deramo searches for love. The American Repertory Theater describes the play as "a fairy tale for all ages, a story of love and betrayal, intrigue and mirth, magic spells and pageantry." Tickets to the show are $6 and are available for purchase at the box office of Watson Auditorium, 1111 S. Dee Road, Park Ridge. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21, 22 and 23.

UPDATE: Police Search For Robber Who Shut Maine South

Police did not have any suspects in custody in connection with a gas station robbery that occurred in the afternoon, according to police. The robber had fled into Park Ridge, causing school lockdowns.

  UPDATE: Des Plaines police are looking for a man they say is responsible for robbing a Shell gas station in Des Plaines at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 14, police stated in a press release on Friday. The man entered the Shell station, 1605 S. River Road, demanded cash from the employee at the register, police stated, took the cash and fled the area. There is video of the robbery, said Sergeant Christopher Mierzwa, but it’s being held as evidence and not being released to the public. Maine South's Haleigh Sir to Compete in Gymnastics State Finals

The senior gymnast will compete in the floor exercise competition this weekend.

  Congratulations to Maine South High School's Haleigh Sir. The senior gymnast has qualified for the state finals. Sir qualified for the state meet at Feb. 4’s sectional at Fremd High School, placing 29th in the floor exercise, according to the Illinois State Gymnastics Stats website. She will compete in the floor exercise at the state meet on Feb. 15 and 16 at Palatine High School.

Maine South's Pat Maloney Signs Letter of Intent

Maloney will play for Ball State's football team next year.

  Maine South High School's Pat Maloney has signed a letter of intent with Ball State University, the Chicago Tribune reports.  Wednesday marked National Signing Day, the first day that high school seniors can sign a binding letter of intent for an NCAA team.  Maloney is one of 21 new signees on Ball State's team. The new players hail from North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Florida and Oklahoma, Fox59 reports.
