Neighborhood rivals meet for first time since early 2000s in bid to advance in state football tournament.
The Illinois High School Association was kind enough to set up a nice little neighborhood tussle for the start of the 2010 Class 8A football playoffs. Maine South (7-2) plays host to Notre Dame (5-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday on Wilson Field in Park Ridge. The schools are 5 miles apart as the car drives and thus have some things in common . While one school is is public and the other is private, they pull from the same neighborhoods to populate their student body and football teams. Hawks slam the New Trier Trevians 42-21 to claim spot as top team in their division.
The number 23, which is famous in Chicago for being on Michael Jordan's basketball jersey, came into play Friday night during Maine South's last regular season football game. After beating rival New Trier 42-21 in champion form on Oct. 22, the Hawks earned their 23rd football playoff appearance in the school's 46-year history. "The years of dedication and great coaching from these guys, it's really something," said head coach David Inserra on winning 10 straight Central Suburban League South (CSL South) titles.
