Additional crossing gates would prevent commuters from walking unawares onto the railroad tracks on Pearson Street, said a shaken Des Plaines resident who witnessed a train hit and kill a pedestrian on Tuesday.
Additional safety precautions are necessary at a Des Plaines railroad crossing, a Des Plaines resident said after seeing a commuter hit by a train on Tuesday morning. Tim Lally, of Des Plaines, had just arrived for a train he usually takes to Chicago a short time before 7:30 a.m. when what Lally described as an accident occurred. Lally, a software trainer, and his neighbor stood on the sidewalk on the southwest side of the railroad tracks at Pearson and Ellinwood streets, behind activated crossing gates, as an express train to Chicago not scheduled to stop in Des Plaines approached the depot. A man standing on the center platform had been speaking with an elderly woman before turning away from her and walking southeast onto Pearson …

Danny You was on top of the world, a friend said, and was crossing train tracks in Morton Grove to meet his fiancee on the other side. She saw the train strike him.
Danny You died on what had been one of the happiest days of his life, a friend said Thursday. You, 38, was crossing the train tracks in Morton Grove at about 6 p.m. Tuesday to meet his fiancee on the other side, said Michael Slattery of Skokie, who identified himself as You's roommate, friend and co-worker at a Morton Grove moving company. "He was on top of the world, because they were supposed to get married Wednesday (the following day)," Slattery said. "He had it all set. They were going to get married at the courthouse." You had taken time off work that morning to get the marriage license, and he planned to surprise his intended with a honeymoon in Hawaii, Slattery added. Those plans changed in an instant when You stepped onto the …

No accident to it. The train speeds are all about the private railroads blowing through populated areas and the proper equipment would make them look bad. Cold, calculated, pre-meditated and budgeted for killing is negligent homicide. Not even gates ---just block off the corner forcing pedestrians to the gate side of the crossing arm. Are these train doors not equal where a wall can't be put down…   more ›
