Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out

Morton Grove Public Library presents a reading from "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Come celebrate the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment with Morton Grove Public Library. All this week the library will highlight Banned Books Week, which takes place from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1. For Banned Books Week, the Morton Grove Public Library chose Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird," a recognized classic though one burdened by numerous challenges over the years since its initial publication in 1960. A majority of these challenges have come from our nation's school's where often-times well intentioned individuals have objected to the novel's racial themes and slurs You can find out more about Banned Books Week from the American Library Association and be sure to check out our Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out: A…

Are You Smarter Than a Morton Grove Teenager?

The library's trivia challenge tests teens' knowledge.

Do you know how many championships Michael Jordan won with the Bulls? How about which president established Thanksgiving? A group of Morton Grove teens was quizzed on these questions and many more at the library’s first Teen Trivia Challenge this week. The contest was the brainstorm of the library’s Teen Leadership Council, many of whose members played a similar game at school. Earlier: Teen Library Council offers guidance Young Adult Services Librarian Jill Wehrheim came up with the hour’s worth of questions — and supplied snacks. Two teams battled for the title in the Jeopardy-like game. Click on the photo gallery to the right to see pictures of the event, as well as sample questions. Photos: Welcome To Morton Grove Day At The Farmers Market

Community Groups, Local Organizations Gather To Celebrate Village, Meet Neighbors

This weekend, the Morton Grove Farmers Market hosted its first festival of summer with the Welcome to Morton Grove Day.  The event is an open house of sorts, gathering many local community organizations, celebrating the village and allowing neighbors to get to know one another. In addition to the weekly offerings of produce, plants, foods, and other merchandise, Saturday's festival featured an inflatable fun house, a balloon artist, temporary and henna tattoos, interactive science demonstrations, live music, crafts, and more. Samina Hussain, Chairwoman of the Morton Grove Illinois Community Relations Commission, stated, "The purpose of this event is to represent as many local entities as possible.  We have all kinds of groups here.  People…

Forensic Audit Remains Hot Issue for Morton Grove Library Board

Trustees discussed the method and purpose of the audit, which was a campaign promise by some of the newly elected board members.

Trustees for the Morton Grove Public Library Board voted 5-1 to move forward audit research at the monthly board meeting June 9, as the Morton Grove Champion reported. Library Director Ben Schapiro was directed by the board to research possible firms to conduct the audit, which was a campaign issue in the April 5 library board elections. “There is a cloud hanging over the library, started by you guys,” said Trustee Daniel Hoffman, according to reporter Cathryn Gran. Library Board Changes Guard in Tense Meeting

New B-PAC members take chairmanship, treasurer posts.

Five new members were sworn into the board of the Morton Grove Public Library Thursday night at a tense meeting that touched lingering sore spots from a hard-fought spring election that swept in four of them. The fifth, Christa Quinn, was appointed at the April board meeting over the public objection of the four trustees-elect, who ran under the party name B-PAC, an acronym of the last names of Paul Berg, Catherine Peters, Mark Albers and David Calimag. New board president and treasurer Now holding a majority of the seven-member board, the B-PAC trustees nominated one of their own, Albers, to fill the vacant chairman’s position. In a move that took the incumbent trustees by surprise, they also removed the existing treasurer, Arthur …

Library Board Discusses Forensic Audit

An auditor spoke to the issue of a forensic audit at Thursday's board meeting.

Five new members were sworn into the board of the Morton Grove Public Library Thursday night after a spring election that swept in four of them. The fifth, Christa Quinn, was appointed at the April board meeting over the public objection of the four trustees-elect, who ran under the party name B-PAC, an acronym of the last names of Paul Berg, Catherine Peters, Mark Albers and David Calimag. The group ran on a platform of lower taxes and the retention of the current library building, and seemed to raise the specter of financial mismanagement with the promise of a five-year “forensic audit” of the library. Such an audit would probably cost in the neighborhood of $50,000, the trustees learned from Dan Berg, an auditor who annually charges …

Since Mr. Berg stated that there has NEVER been anything out of line in the library audits, why would we need a forensic audit. There is, at present, no money to cover such an audit and I for one would be most upset if money earmarked for REAL library needs were to be reallocated to such a wasteful activity. MGPL has a healthy budget, no outstanding debts and has had a board that has watched very…   more ›

VIDEO: Morton Grove Library's Spring Blast Ushers In New Season

Magic? Fire trucks? Dancing? Yes, it's all in the video.

A few hundred kids, adults and tweens in between enjoyed games, crafts, performances and free popcorn, to mark the fourth annual Spring Blast on Saturday. Hosted by the Morton Grove Public Library, the four-hour fair filled the library parking lot with tents and vendors, even hosting a farmer's market.  Check out the video to catch a hint of the action.

Letter to the Editor: The Truth is the Truth, Especially During Elections

Board member of Morton Grove Public Library and coordinator for PROLibrary election organization Daniel Hoffman responds to recent campaign statements for the April 5 election.

I would like to take this opportunity to once again point out how grossly uneducated and misinformed Mark Albers and his fellow members of B-PAC are on how a Library Board of Trustees works. They have repeatedly demonstrated an inability to do the most basic due diligence before presenting as fact to the population of Morton Grove such assertions (in their own words) as “The taxpayers do not have to vote to approve a new [library] building. Any referendum is only advisory. The library board may overrule it. The village board cannot block it. The simple, frightening truth is that seven people can decide to spend $20-30 million to build a new library no matter what anyone else thinks. That is why [our group] exists."  Through their own …

I would like to know who put Mr. Podgers up on a pedestal, so he can look down on others an reprimand them for not agreeing with his version of the truth. Whenever I see the term Troll, I think of a person who has run out of valid arguments and is resorting to name calling. Rather juvenile. The current library board suffers from the same arrogance as the village board. They will only meet …   more ›
