Learn About Your Muslim Neighbors At Q&A

A college professor and educators from Morton Grove's Islamic school will give a brief intro to Islam at the Morton Grove Library Wednesday. Questions--on topics from headscarves to Ramadan--are welcome.

Residents from Morton Grove and surrounding communities will have a chance to learn about the Islamic faith and culture from their Muslim neighbors at Morton Grove’s Muslim Community Center, thanks to an upcoming interactive forum called “Muslim Faith and Culture, a Neighborhood Q&A” slated for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, at the Morton Grove Public Library. Representatives from the MCC will be on hand to answer questions on everything from “what is the Islamic faith?”, to daily life aspects such as headscarves, holidays and more. Audience members will be invited to submit questions. Man Charged In Mosque Air Rifle Incident Barred From Leaving State

Judge clarifies the house arrest of the Morton Grove man charged with the air rifle shooting, and turns down his request to leave the state for work next week. Also, a mosque leader emphasizes seriousness of the shooting.

At a Cook County court hearing Tuesday in Skokie, the man charged with shooting an air rifle at the Morton Grove mosque on Aug. 10 tried to work out details of how he can go to his job while wearing an electronic home monitor. Judge Marguerite Quinn was amenable to finding a solution, saying she didn't want the man, David Conrad, to lose his job.  Conrad is charged with three counts of agravated discharge of a firearm (Class X felonies) and one count of criminal damage to property, a Class 4 felony.  Judge Quinn turned thumbs down when Conrad's attorney, Todd Pugh, asked if Conrad could fulfill his employer's request to go to New Buffalo, Mich. next Monday for work purposes.  Like Niles-Morton Grove Patch on Facebook for news. …

Muslims Enter Final Days of Ramadan Fast

At the Morton Grove mosque, Muslims shared how the month of fasting from sunup to sundown helps them feel closer to God.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will end Sunday or Monday, but at the beginning, Imad Shamsuddin, 21, said he bought a lot of junk food to snack on at night. He barely opens half of it, though, he found, saying his appetite is smaller because of the sunrise-to-sunset fast every day of the month. (Most Muslims eat a meal before sunrise, then break the fast with an evening meal at sunset, taking no food or drink during daylight hours.) Shamsuddin, of Skokie, and others at Morton Grove's Muslim Community Center for prayers Wednesday said fasting is challenging, but taking the focus off of food and things of this world helps them feel closer to God.  Earlier: Starbucks barista makes drinks all day, can't drink any "It's about taqwa--God …

Soda Bomb Threat Unnerves MG Worshippers

A 'MacGyver bomb' thrown at an Islamic school in Lombard yesterday set Muslims at Morton Grove's mosque further on edge after Friday's air rifle shooting.

The air-rifle shooting incident Friday was only one of a recent series of events that have made worshippers at Morton Grove's mosque nervous, said a leader Tuesday. As Muslims draw their holy month of Ramadan to a close at the end of this week, several incidents have happened, said Rizwan Kadir, immediate past chairman of the Muslim Community Center Full-Time School, including: "When you look at this sequence of events, it has taken an emotional toll on us," Kadir explained. "My biggest consolation is that school (the MCC Full-Time School) was not in session or it would have been worse." Get Niles and Morton Grove news from Patch in your email.
