Morton Grove Police Honor Fallen Officers

The department held a dignified ceremony Saturday on a day the nation honors law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.

  Morton Grove police held a Peace Officers Memorial Day flag ceremony on Saturday, honoring fallen police officers. The department honored one of its own, Officer Barry Shalin, who was killed in the line of duty in 1989. The video attached to this story opens with Morton Grove Police Chief Mark Erickson talking about Shalin. He also memorialized Officer Kyle Deatherage of the Illinois State Police, who lost his life in the line of duty this year. Erickson read a prayer asking for divine guidance to guide police in their work and divine protection to bring them home to their families at the end of the day. Morton Grove Police Blotter: Drug Arrest, DUIs and More

The following information was supplied by the Morton Grove Police Department. An arrest is not a conviction.

Aggravated Identity Theft Roger Shimanovsky, 51, of Niles was charged January 22 with aggravated identity theft. Police stated that Shimanovsky used family members credit cards and wrote two unauthorized checks. DUI Jennifer L. Lagioia, 19, of Skokie was charged January 23 with DUI after a traffic stop. Dexter O. Trannon, 22, of Chicago was charged January 27 with DUI after a traffic stop. Drug Charge Charles J. Lapaglia, 18, of Morton Grove was charged January 24 with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and resisting arrest. Police stated that Lapaglia agreed to sell cannabis to an undercover police officer and subsequently ran away when they tried to arrest him. Morton Grove Blotter: LA Fitness Locker Thefts And More

LA Fitness Incidents Morton Grove police took six reports Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 at LA Fitness, 6821 W. Dempster St. In two incidents on Sept. 10, a vehicle had a window smashed and a purse was taken. Also on Sept. 10 an iPhone was taken from a locker while a person was working out. On Sept. 11, police took three reports of cash being taken from lockers while people were working out. Thefts Two bottles of antibiotics were taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 7200 block of Arcadia Street. The incident was reported on Sept. 8 and the vehicle was parked on the street at the time of the incident. A bicycle parked outside Starbucks, 6763 Dempster St., was reported stolen on Sept. 8.   Arrests Javier, Castrejon, 24, and Jason Khim, 24, both of Chicago, were arrested by police on Aug. 1 in the 8700 block of Waukegan Rd. Police first made a traffic stop and discovered cannabis in the vehicle the two subjects were driving in, which was packaged for sale.  Both Castrejon and Khim were charged with possession of controlled substance and posssession of cannabis with intent to deliver. A court date is scheduled for Sept. 4.  Leslie Robinson, 25, of Rockford, was stopped by police for a traffic violation on Aug. 2 in the 6900 block of Dempster and was charged with driving on a suspended driver's license. MoGro Blotter: Drug Deal Foiled, Attempted Laptop Theft

  Arrests Brandon L. Godla, 26, and Elton A. Jacobson, 21, both of Morton Grove were apprehended by police on July 26 due to a report of a possible drug deal in progress in the 7900 block of Foster Avenue.  Police stopped the vehicle involved and found drug paraphernalia, cannabis, and a Xanax pill. Godla was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and Jacobson charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. No court date(s) were provided by police.  James R. Paszkiewicz, 19, of Glenview, was stopped for traffic violations on July 28 when officers smelled burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle in the 5600 block of Dempster. Suburban Cops Prepping For NATO Summit

Police don't expect terrorism here, but cops in Morton Grove, Niles and elsewhere are training for reaction to NATO summit in three weeks. Since there's an alert out re: the bin Laden anniversary, the extra prep could come in handy.

North suburban police departments are training to back up Chicago police for the NATO summit May 20-21 – and to handle any incidents that spill out beyond the city limits. Since the Department of Homeland Security issued an alert for potential terrorism on the May 1 anniversary of the bin Laden killing, the extra training can't hurt. Regarding the NATO summit, “There’s concern throughout the suburbs – whether it’s northern, western or southern – that something could expand out of Chicago,” said Morton Grove Police Chief Mark Erickson. “For the most part, it’s just a concern. Feb. 21  Sale of tobacco products to a minor - Mohammad Anis, employee of Tobacco Outlet, was issued a citation for allegedly selling a pack of cigarettes to a 16-year-old who was working with the police to check businesses in Morton Grove for compliance with tobacco sale laws. Tobacco Outlet was also issed a citation and a administrative hearing is scheduled for March 14. Feb. 17  Liquor Law Violation: Delivery or Sale to a Minor - Ashley M. Feb. 17 Assault - The offender made stabbing motions toward the victim with a knife during an disagreement on the 5900 block of Oakton. The victim did not wish to sign complaints. Feb. 16 Attempted Deceptive Practice - An unknown offender called the victim several times attempting to get the victims personal information by telling him he had won a sweepstake prize. Feb. 17 Deceptive Practice - An unknown offender called the victim several times telling her she won $2.5 million dollars then attempted to get the victim to send him money in order to claim the winnings. Feb. 20 Criminal Damage to Property - Unknown offender(s) painted gang graffiti on the park fieldhouse wall on the 8900 block of Oketo.

Morton Grove Police Investigating Teen's Death

19-year-old found unresponsive on Saturday in Morton Grove.

Morton Grove Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old male who died on Saturday. The teen was found unresponsive at a house on the 5500 block of Madison in Morton Grove. Officers attempted CPR on the male, who was found to be not breathing and without a heartbeat, until paramedics from the Morton Grove Fire Department arrived. The 19-year-old was brought to Skokie Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Preliminary reports indicate that the male was not a victim of a violent crime, but the investigation is ongoing, according to the Morton Grove Police Department. The identity of the victim is not being released at this time.
