Javar Bamberg died after he was shot in the head in Evanston Tuesday morning, according to police. Investigators say his death is related to a feud between two extended families with gang ties.
Evanston police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Evanston man who they say was shot and killed in an alley in the 1700 block of Grey Avenue around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. Police responded to a call of shots fired in the 1800 block of Hovland Court, and found Javar Bamberg lying in the alleyway, according to a press release from the Evanston Police Department. Bamberg was shot in the head and died at the scene, police said. “The investigation at this time has shown that this is not a random act,” Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott said in the release. The north and northwest suburbs served by the Patch sites in Cook and Lake counties are listed below in charts for violent crimes and property crimes. The data reflect communities that reported crime statistics for all 12 months of 2010. Due to a change in state reporting methods, Illinois statistics from 2010 cannot be compared to 2009 statistics, according to the FBI. Glenview, Niles, Wilmette and Glencoe were not included in the FBI's release of data. Victim's family expresses anger and sadness.
In handing down two life sentences to convicted killer Marni Yang Friday, Judge Christopher Stride said the case stood out in his 20 years of experience in criminal courts. It wasn’t unusual because of the amount of media attention that surrounded the killing because the victim, Rhoni Reuter, was pregnant with the unborn child of former Chicago Bears player Shaun Gayle. It was, he told Yang, becauase of “the methodical, meticulous and maniacal manner in which you committed this crime." Yang received two concurrent life sentences — one for Reuter’s death and one for the death of her unborn child — nearly five years after she plotted to kill Reuter in her Deerfield condominium. Judge set bond at $8 million for 24-year-old Wilmette resident Anthony Rapoport, for allegedly beating his aunt to death with an aluminum bat.
Hershel Rapoport had been upstairs with his wife on Christmas Day when he heard a loud argument in the kitchen. As the disagreement escalated, Rapoport came downstairs in time to see his grandson, Anthony Rapoport, bludgeon Anthony's aunt Nancee Rapoport with an aluminum baseball bat, according to police reports and testimony held in court Monday. Nancee died Sunday from the head injuries she sustained, Assistant State's Attorney Supervisor Robert Heilingoetter told the court. Anthony appeared in Skokie at the Second Municipal District Circuit Court of Cook County Monday for a bond hearing on a charge of first degree murder. Bail was set at $8 million in cash. Anthony Rapoport, 24, has been charged with first degree murder of his aunt and will face bond court Monday afternoon.
A 24-year-old Wilmette resident was arrested by police on Christmas for the murder of his 49-year-old aunt, according to a statement released Monday from Chief Brian King. Anthony Rapoport had been arrested by police the day before, on Christmas Eve, following a verbal argument with his aunt, Nancee Rapoport, the release states. Wilmette police arrested Anthony Friday after a background check revealed he had an "outstanding warrant for an aggravated assault case in Skokie," according to officials. One year ago, Edgardo de la Torre was supposed to turn 16. If not for an act of violence, his parents might have been buying their eldest son a birthday cake. Instead, they made the painful decision to take him off of life support. Niles police said Francisco Moran, then 16, of Glenview, used a stolen car to intentionally run over de la Torre, a former friend, in the south parking lot of Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles.
