Muslim Experts Give Friendly Q&A On Islam

No subject was off-limits as three Muslim educators good-naturedly handled questions on Islam from a large audience in Morton Grove. All had ties to the Morton Grove mosque, and wanted to help neighbors understand Islam better.

About 70 people filled the Morton Grove Library's Baxter room Wednesday to hear three Muslim educators, with ties to Morton Grove's Muslim Community Center, give a lively question and answer session about their faith.  Habeeb Qadri, the principal of the MCC's Full Time School and a former staff member and student at Harvard University's Principals' Center, started the evening off with a brief introduction to Islam. Then he joined two others at a panel. They were Omer Mozaffer, who teaches at the University of Chicago's Graham School and is an adjunct professor of theology at Loyola University, and Abeer Saleh, who teaches science at the MCC's Full Time School. b garrett- every nation, and city, sadly has bigots that want to oppress people unlike them. Bigotry against Muslims un the U.S. is underreported in the U.S. while bigotry against non-Muslims in Muslim dominant countries is overreported. They are allowed to practice- that just isn't big news.   more ›

Muslims Enter Final Days of Ramadan Fast

At the Morton Grove mosque, Muslims shared how the month of fasting from sunup to sundown helps them feel closer to God.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will end Sunday or Monday, but at the beginning, Imad Shamsuddin, 21, said he bought a lot of junk food to snack on at night. He barely opens half of it, though, he found, saying his appetite is smaller because of the sunrise-to-sunset fast every day of the month. (Most Muslims eat a meal before sunrise, then break the fast with an evening meal at sunset, taking no food or drink during daylight hours.) Shamsuddin, of Skokie, and others at Morton Grove's Muslim Community Center for prayers Wednesday said fasting is challenging, but taking the focus off of food and things of this world helps them feel closer to God.  Earlier: Starbucks barista makes drinks all day, can't drink any "It's about taqwa--God …

Soda Bomb Threat Unnerves MG Worshippers

A 'MacGyver bomb' thrown at an Islamic school in Lombard yesterday set Muslims at Morton Grove's mosque further on edge after Friday's air rifle shooting.

The air-rifle shooting incident Friday was only one of a recent series of events that have made worshippers at Morton Grove's mosque nervous, said a leader Tuesday. As Muslims draw their holy month of Ramadan to a close at the end of this week, several incidents have happened, said Rizwan Kadir, immediate past chairman of the Muslim Community Center Full-Time School, including: "When you look at this sequence of events, it has taken an emotional toll on us," Kadir explained. "My biggest consolation is that school (the MCC Full-Time School) was not in session or it would have been worse." Get Niles and Morton Grove news from Patch in your email. Muslim Center Invites All To Global Fest

Booths showcase many countries which MCC Full Time School students come from, and each booth gave free food samples.

"The jackfruit is our most popular fruit," Fatema Haque said, pointing to a photo of a whole jackfruit, and then inviting visitors to sample some cut-up fruit on a platter. She was standing behind the Bangladesh display table at Cultural Night Thursday at the Muslim Community Center Full Time School in Morton Grove. All around the school's gym, display tables were set up from 21 countries--each with maps, artifacts and art from the country, and each offering a typical food to the many interested people who came to the festival. "This is a dream come true for me," said Rizwan Kadir, chairman of the MCC Full Time School council, who was key in organizing the fest.  "We're new in the community so the onus is on us to introduce ourselves." …
