A 70-year-old Niles man reported his bank statement showed several unauthorized transactions between Feb. 25 and March 23. Almost $3,500 was removed from his account, according to the report. A majority of the transactions were made in Lancaster, Calif. Police are investigating. A 38-year-old Niles woman called police Monday at about 10:45 a.m. to report her townhouse in the 7700 block of Nordica had been broken into and burglarized, according to police. The long, daunting ramp and staircase will be removed and the building given a more attractive, welcoming entrance. Architects created an indoor staircase and elevator instead.
The Niles Police Department building won an award from the American Institute of Architects when it was created in 2005. But rust and crumbling pavement have appeared on or near the long ramp leading to the second-story entrance, and the police department has received many comments that the ramp, as well as the long, shallow staircase, are difficult to climb, especially with snow and ice in winter. They had their heads shaved for St. Baldrick's Day, in a benefit for pediatric cancer.
From the Niles Police Department Two members of the Niles Police Department participated in the 2013 St. Baldrick’s event and shaved their heads for Pediatric Cancer Research. The event took place on Friday, March 8 at Hanging Gardens Banquet Hall in River Grove. Detective Sgt. John Huinker and Detective Joseph Paglia shaved their heads as part of the event. To raise funds for Special Olympics, three members of the Niles Police Department jumped into Lake Michigan Feb. 24--after someone cut a pool in the ice.
When Niles Police Department staffers went to the beach at Evanston on Feb. 24, there was quite a bit of ice. Barbara DiGuido of Special Olympics Illinois, the organization for which the officers were raising charitable funds, said volunteers had to break up some of the ice so that those participating in the fundraiser could dip into the frigid waters. Conditions are different every year, she said, for the event called the Illinois Law Enforcement Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. On Feb. 11, the owner of a store in the 9000 block of Milwaukee Avenue told police his store sells tickets for various functions, and that he could not locate an envelope with cash from ticket sales, which was last seen on a counter behind the cash register area, according to the report. The owner reviewed security footage and saw that three women had entered the store just after 10:30 a.m. Police said the tape showed one woman asking an employee to show her a cooking pot from a top shelf while another woman went behind the cash register area, and the video shows her crouching down and then standing up. After a Niles bank was robbed Saturday, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and Niles Police on Sunday arrested Walter Unbehaun, 73, of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Unbehaun was charged with one count of bank robbery, a felony, in a criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. The promotions fill vacancies left by retirements in 2012.
The Niles Police Department has announced the promotions of three staff members. They fill vacancies left by retirements last year. The department promoted Detective Thomas Fragassi and Detective George Alexopoulos to the rank of sergeant. Both will be assigned to the Patrol Division, after first undergoing a two month training assignment. They will serve on first watch. The Niles Police Department stepped up enforcement Dec. 17 though New Year's Eve in an effort to prevent holiday-season tragedies on the roads. Here are the results of the enforcement push, called "Drive to Survive": The department made six DUI arrests, three drug arrests and two zero tolerance arrests during the recent “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over / Click It or Ticket” holiday crackdown, said Sgt. After the Newtown shootings, police will revisit plans for safety at schools.
The Niles Police Department has released the following statement, indicating they intend to perform a safety audit of schools in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shootings Dec. 14. The Niles Police Department's primary mission is the protection of the public wherever they may be in the Village of Niles. It is with this primary mission in mind that after the incident in Newtown Connecticut that the Niles Police Department stepped up visible patrols around schools that were still in session prior to the holiday break. Much needed improvement. A public building gets salted to death to keep it safe for daily public safe travel. Cement stairs and steel or aluminum gets ruined quickly in that environment.
