See Who Is Going to State Track Meet

Athletes from Deerfield High School, Glenbrook South, New Trier, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame of Niles, Niles North, Glenbrook North, Maine East and Loyola competed for berths at the State Meet at the Niles West Sectional

Athletes from 17 area schools competed for berths in the State Track Meet during the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie. Take a look for your favorite athlete and see who is going to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Patch gave you the story in words Friday and now we have it in pictures. Patch will have coverage of the State Meet and you check the results on the Illinois High Association website in real time starting with the first preliminary race Friday.

Evanston Takes Sectional Track Crown

Glenbrook South, New Trier, Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame, Niles North and Loyola athletes will join Wildkits at State Meet.

Taking home the team trophy for the sixth straight year, the Evanston High School boys track team won the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie sending five individuals and three relay teams to the State Meet May 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston The Wildkits compiled 85 points. Glenbrook South took home second place with 72 followed by Prospect in third with 70 and New Trier fourth with 58. Niles West accumulated 47 for fifth with  Deerfield sixth, Main South seventh, Niles North eighth, Highland Park ninth place, Notre Dame of Niles tenth, Maine West 11th , Loyola Academy 12th, Maine East 13th\, Glenbrook North 14th and Von Steuben 15th. Niles-Area Gymnasts Place at State Meet

Several athletes from Niles West, Niles North and Northridge Prep competed in the meet last weekend.

  Several Niles-area gymnasts competed in the Illinois High School Association state meet this weekend at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfurt. Niles West freshman Nomondalai Jamiyankhuu was the stand-out, with a 12th place all-around finish. Niles Township High School District 219 Raises $6,000 For Charity

Niles North and Niles West high schools raised the money for Rustic Falls Nature Camp, a camp for underserved and special needs children, as well as children cancer survivors.

  Information provided by Niles Township High School District 219.   A scooter ride through Niles West, sporting event and concert tickets, restaurant and shopping gift certificates, and cookies baked by a favorite teacher were just a few of the sought-after items that Niles Township High School District 219 teachers, staff and students donated for the schools’ tBay auction recently. Like the items offered by online auction giant eBay, many unusual and popular objects or experiences were on sale. A stack of 20 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Sold! A primo locker location next year? Sold! Prom tickets and a limo? Of course, that sold! All in all, the fifth annual tBay brought in close to $6,000 for this year’s School Chest beneficiary, …

Niles West Science Olympiad Places at State

The team took 13th place overall, Niles West News reports.

  The Niles West High School Science Olympiad team finished 13th at the state competition earlier this month, Niles West News reports. Patrick Liscio and Shana Nissan placed fifth place for Technical Problem Solving.  Liscio and Reyvin Reyes also earned third place for Fermi Questions. Top ten finishes included Circuit Lab, Maglev, Chem Lab, Forensics, Experimental Design and Bottle Rocket Construction, the newspaper reports.

Disruptive Niles West Seniors Shut Down Pep Assembly

Principal Kaine Osburn called the actions of students responsible as "selfish."

  Rowdy students forced Niles West High School Principal Kaine Osburn to shut down a school assembly on Friday, the Niles Herald-Spectator reports. Seniors started throwing toilet paper, silly string and other objects into the air during the boys gymnastics performance, and started chanting “2013," Niles West News reports. “Before the assembly today, on the PA I again emphasized that certain behaviors would not be tolerated.  Nonetheless, at an orchestrated moment 15 minutes into the assembly, between 100 and 200 seniors chose to disrupt the gymnastics performance with a prolonged expression of chanting, cheering and behavior that became unsafe and made it impossible for the assembly to continue,” Osburn said on his blog. Niles West Students Earn Medals at WYSE Competition

Patrick Liscio won first place in mathematics at the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering state competition.

  Several Niles West High School students took home medals at the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering state competition, Niles West News reports. Patrick Liscio earned first place in mathematics and fourth in chemistry. Joe Darga placed sixth in physics and Zach Cohen earned fourth place in biology. The competition took place on April 8 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the newspaper reports.

District 219 Students Custom Design Vans Shoes

Niles West High School art students are competing for a chance to win $50,000 for the school’s art program.

  Four pairs of customized Vans shoes designed by Niles Township High School District 219 art students are currently on display at the Central Suburban League Art Show in Highland Park. Niles West High School students Beata Soltys, Barbara Mageira, Nicole Neinow and Jessica Pham customized the shoes as part of Vans’ Custom Culture contest where high school students across the U.S. compete for a chance to win $50,000 for their school’s art program. Schools received four pairs of blank Vans sneakers and students were invited to customize the shoes into four themes, art, music, action sports and local flavor. Niles West students will wait to see if they are included in the group of 50 semifinalists. Public online voting will begin on April 22…

Niles West Kids Win 'Harlem Shake' Contest

As soon as students in science teacher Jason Foster's class heard about the contest, they couldn't sit still. Watch the video. In fact, here are lots of Niles West Harlem Shake videos.

  When Niles West News sponsored a Harlem Shake contest, various homerooms at Niles West High School started moving to the familiar beat. Students voted in the Niles West News contest, and Science teacher Jason Foster's class won it. You can see their Harlem Shake video--and several other Harlem Shake videos filmed at Niles West--attached to this story. Foster said the idea took off as soon as students heard about it. "Actually, this part came about rather fast, organically, everyone in homeroom had an idea to do so we quickly agreed that everyone will do their special dance and picked a day during homeroom," he wrote in an email to Patch. So did they spend a lot of time rehearsing? "LOL...we rehearsed it probably twice," Foster responded…
