Term Limits? Yes, And How About Limits To Arrogance?

The following letter to the editor expresses the views of the author. Patch merely serves as a forum allow writers to state their opinions.  A Bugle article (11-1-12) quotes Trustee Andrew Przybylo on his deep thoughts about the impact of the term limit issue following in the wake of concerned citizen Joe Makula’s petition efforts. Przybylo’s comments have raised the eyebrows of many of us in Niles in utter disbelief at Andrew’s so-called thoughts. First, he claims that term limits could cause “GIFTED INCUMBENTS” to be replaced! Imagine his GIFTED politicians who may have “served” for a possible twenty-eight years might be replaced! Why Niles Is Ready For Term Limits

Asking politicians to vote for term limits is like asking chickens to vote for Col. Sanders. So citizens have to do it, to head off the type of corruption born of Blase's 47 years as mayor.

  The following Letter to the Editor expresses the opinions of the author. Patch merely provides a forum for readers to explain their views.  On July 27, the Village Clerk of Niles was presented with more than a thousand signatures calling for a ballot measure this November to limit service on the Niles Board of Trustees to a maximum of 16 years.  Unlike the advisory referendum regarding off-track betting a few years ago, this citizen initiative is intended to be a binding referendum which would impact government in Niles immediately.  As a professional political scientist, I am always pleased to see citizens get involved in their own governance, and I was delighted to advise and assist Mr. Makula, who organized this exercise in citizen …

This is an outstanding letter by Dr. Kurfirst. For me, as somebody who has worked to promote citizen engagement, the points raised are right on target. What comes next then is both to push for adoption of the measure in November (assuming no games are played with the referendum being placed on the ballot) while seeking out and equiping a wide variety of citizens to run for office.   more ›
