Niles Police confirmed they had been investigating the Notre Dame College Prep teacher for inappropriate communications with students. The Niles Chamber is discussing what to do about the award it was to give Balentine in 10 days.
Updated 5:20 p.m. Wednesday The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said the cause of death for Balentine was asphyxiation and hanging, and ruled it a suicide. Police said they found Richard Balentine, who was due to receive the Niles Chamber's Teacher of the Year award in 11 days, lifeless in his room, of an apparent suicide.
Niles police said Tuesday that Richard Balentine, a faculty member at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles, was found dead in his residential room on the school's campus. Balentine, 38, was due to receive the 2013 "Teacher of the Year" award April 27 from the Niles Chamber of Commerce, during its Night of the Roses gala awards dinner. The semifinal game Thursday ended in a heart-racing 59-58 score.
The Notre Dame College Prep Dons faced New Trier Thursday in a seminfinal at Glenbrook North. Though Matt Mooney racked up 23 points for the Dons, according to High School Cube, and Donte Stephenson contributed 21 points, it was not enough to stop an ever-so-thin 59-58 win by New Trier. Lake Forest High School played Notre Dame High School in Niles on Friday in a battle of blows. While each team came up with big plays throughout the game, LFHS ultimately took the lead early on and managed to hold on to it. The final score was 31-19. Rev. William Brinker, CSC, one of the founding priests of Notre Dame College Prep, a boys' Catholic high school in Niles, died Sunday at 93 years of age, the school reported. Fr. Brinker taught math and religion at the school, and even in recent years, tutored math. Funeral arrangements will be held at the University of Notre Dame, from which Brinker graduated in 1942.
