More than 660 students received degrees and certificates at Oakton Community College’s 42nd Annual Commencement, held May 14, at the College’s Des Plaines campus. After a welcome by Oakton Community College President Margaret B. Lee, Student Government Association Past President Alfred Raul Hegyes of Niles gave a farewell address. He served as co-president and president of Oakton’s Habitat for Humanity Chapter, and stepped into his SGA role in summer 2012. As SGA president, Hegyes was a tireless booster, spearheading efforts to increase student attendance at College basketball games. Oakton Community College will remain closed due to flooding in Des Plaines, according to a spokesperson.
Oakton Community College's Des Plaines campus will remain closed due to flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23-24, according to a spokesperson. Janet Spector-Bishop stated in an email to Patch that the campus in Skokie would be open, but many events at the campus in Des Plaines were rescheduled or canceled. Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road in Des Plaines, is closed April 18 because of flooding. A message on the college's website states that all classes are canceled. However, the Student Leadership Banquet still is expected to be held tonight. The college is encouraging people to check back for updates after 2 p.m. or call 847-635-1699.

The college is cutting back on adjunct hours to avoid the expense of paying for health care benefits, the Daily Herald reports.
Oakton Community College is cutting back on the number of hours given to adjunct faculty to avoid the expense of providing them with health care, the Daily Herald reports. Under the Affordable Care Act, employers with at least 50 full-time equivalent employees will be required to offer health care to those who work 31 hours or more per week in 2014. At Oakton, adjuncts are being assigned no more than 21 “learning hour equivalents” in 2013, the newspaper reports, to make sure they won’t be listed as full-time employees by the IRS. Cutting back on adjunct faculty hours isn’t the only way Oakton is trying to make ends meet. Trustees are also considering a tuition increase and will vote on the subject later this spring.

Oakton Community College’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program is joining organizations from more than 160 countries around the world to participate in "One Billion Rising," a campaign calling for one billion men and women to raise awareness about violence against women. Michael Carr, Ph.D., has been named as assistant dean for Academic Affairs at Oakton Community College. A resident of Elgin, Carr previously chaired the College’s Biological Sciences Department and served as a professor of biology. In his new post, Carr will oversee Oakton’s large and diverse adjunct faculty. “We have an incredible group of part-time instructors,” he notes. “Many of them are professionals in their respective fields, all bring a wealth of experience to the table.
