Chicagoland news to talk about: More teacher strikes loom; Chicago schools might ban whole milk.

Two brothers were each sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in federal prison after being convicted last year of engaging in a home-repair fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims on the city’s south and west sides, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. The defendants, John J. Sullivan, formerly of Northbrook, and his brother, Daniel J. Sullivan, of Niles, swindled more than 50 victims out of a total of almost $750,000 in equity in their homes. Prosecuters said the brothers would promise to perform expensive home repairs, convincing victims to refinance their homes to pay the costs, then later intentionally failed to perform or complete the projects. Unable to come to an agreement at their last negotiating session on Monday, the Grayslake …

Patch Flash: O’Hare to Get Faster Security Scanners By Thanksgiving

Chicagoland news to talk about: Investigators say Brookfield shooting may be copycat crime.

Faster lines and less-invasive security screenings are on the horizon for passengers traveling through O'Hare International Airport. The TSA announced Monday it will phase out the controversial "X-ray" body scanners from O'Hare and four other major airports in favor of millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines that render a generic human body outline. the TSA estimates O'Hare will have up to 14 of the new scanners up and running by Thanksgiving. A mix of the backscatter and AIT machines will be used until all of the old machines have been replaced. For one Aurora resident, his hundreds-strong bird hoarding obsession started with a single rescued parakeet. Over the past seven years, Dave Skeberdis had been buying and …

Patch Flash: CMAP Pushes for Pricier Tolls, Faster Commute

Chicagoland news to talk about: Cook County board president wants new tax on video gaming.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency (CMAP) is recommending congestion pricing for five new construction projects, including the extension of Rte. 53. CMAP says studies show significant benefits of congestion pricing, which uses "express toll lanes" to manage traffic for faster, reliable travel times. "Our research confirms that congestion pricing is an important tool for managing traffic flow," said CMAP executive director Randy Blankenhorn. "While the projected gross toll revenues for these five projects will help defray a portion construction costs -- which is significant because the days of abundant federal and  state funds are over -- the primary reason to implement congestion pricing is that it gives travelers a choice and manages our …

Patch Flash: State Prison Gets New Owners

Chicagoland news to talk about: Halloween banned for some north suburban students.

The federal government has agreed to buy the closed Thomson Correctional Center in western Illinois for $165 million after the sale was held up for nearly three years, state leaders announced Tuesday. Many Illinois leaders – including U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Gov. Pat Quinn who spoke to The Associated Press ahead of a news conference to announce the sale – supported the purchase because they said it would bring up to 1,100 jobs to Illinois. Federal officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, have said it would help alleviate prison overcrowding. "It means a prison that has been sitting here empty will be used again and create a lot of opportunity for working families in the areas," Durbin said.   Illinois is among states that …

Patch Flash: Madigan Asked If She Can Juggle Being Mom and Governor

Chicagoland news to talk about: Pumpkins' Corgan to open Highland Park tea house on Thursday.

As speculation grows whether Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) will mount a challenge to Gov. Pat Quinn (D) in 2014, Madigan is already being pressed on whether she is fit to run for office -- because she is the mother of two young children. While at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. last week, reporters asked Madigan whether she could be governor and still raise her daughters, who are ages 4 and 7.  "Wow. Does anybody ever ask that question?" she responded. "I'm very lucky to have the support of my family. My husband helps take care of our kids. But, I think more people should ask that of men running for office as well."  A last ditch effort to avoid a work stoppage by Lake Forest High School teachers failed…
