Patch's High School Football Awards

With the season over for a majority of the North Shore's football teams, Patch hands out some awards after another exciting regular season.

As quickly as the regular season started back in late August, it came to an end just before Halloween. With some of Patch’s North Shore teams competing in the playoffs and the others getting a head start on off-season conditioning, we’re going to hand out awards in our recap of the 2011 regular season. It was another great one. Best Game: Maine South 45, Glenbrook South 21 – Week 9. The Titans gave Maine South all it could handle for three quarters before the Hawks pulled away late. Glenbrook South pulled out all the stops in the hopes of putting an end to Maine South’s CSL South decade-long dominance. Wide receiver Sully Stadler, who will be going to Indiana on a baseball scholarship, took a reverse and threw to running back Billy Pappas …

Patch's Football Rankings - End of Regular Season

Maine South won the conference with a victory over Glenbrook South, but fell to No. 2 in our rankings.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s football teams. The regular season ends with seven North Shore teams making the playoffs. Highland Park was the only team that was playoff-eligible, but failed to qualify because of a weak strength of schedule. Although Glenbrook North and Niles North had disappointing seasons, both finished off 2011 with a big win. Loyola Academy finishes the regular season at No. 1 because of a statement victory over St. Rita for its conference championship, but a third straight playoff matchup between the Ramblers and Maine South seems inevitable. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. FINAL REGULAR SEASON RANKINGS 1. Loyola Academy (3) – The Ramblers dominated St. Rita 34-7 to win the Catholic…

Vikings' Playoff Run Ends with Super-Sectional Loss to Warren

Despite 27 points from Abdel Nader, the Vikings had trouble with Warren's size and athleticism.

Despite the vast development of Niles North’s role players throughout the season, the Vikings’ offense still largely depended on the play-making ability of Abdel Nader. The 6-foot, 6-inch senior guard’s high-scoring outputs carried Niles North to the school’s first sectional title, but in Wednesday’s Super-Sectional the Vikings finally met a team that matched their athleticism and quickness. Featuring a starting lineup with no player under 6-foot-2, Warren’s depth and balance was too much for Niles North as the Blue Devils held on for a 56-50 victory in the IHSA Class 4A Waukegan Super-Sectional. “They’re really big. I think it affects everybody they play,” Niles North Coach Glenn Olson said. “They’ve got a college lineup and we don’t. “We…

Vikings Capture First Ever Sectional Title with Comeback Victory

The Vikings rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to stun Schaumburg.

Niles North Coach Glenn Olson was visibly frustrated with his team after the first half. And he had reason to be. The Vikings were settling for jump shots, missing open three-pointers and playing lazy defense. This wasn’t the same Niles North team with only one loss since December. This wasn’t their brand of basketball. But all of that turned around in the final 16 minutes. Their second-half play epitomized this Niles North squad: hard-nosed defense, strong rebounding and miles of heart and toughness. On the strength of their defense, the Vikings rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit and pulled out a hard-fought 53-52 win over Schaumburg to win the IHSA Class 4A Winnetka Sectional championship. It is the first sectional championship for…

Niles West's Playoff Run Ends With Loss to Schaumburg

The Saxons got out to a 22-2 lead in the second quarter and held on for a 56-48 victory.

In only his second year Niles West Coach Bob Williams has already put his stamp on the Niles West basketball program. He’s instilled a relentless pressure defense and Niles West captured their first regional championship since 2004. But the one thing Williams can’t teach his team – experience -- finally caught up to them in Wednesday night’s sectional semifinal. In the blink of an eye – or roughly the first nine minutes of the game – a more seasoned Schaumburg team blitzed Niles West for a 22-2 lead.  The Wolves climbed back to within four points on two occasions, but never closed the deficit completely in a 56-48 loss to the Saxons in the IHSA Class 4A Winnetka Sectional semi-finals. “I think the situation got to us a bit. We did some …

Wolves Pull Upset over Loyola, Advance to Regional Finals

After falling behind by four points late in the fourth quarter, the Wolves rallied and will face Maine South on Friday.

Niles West guard Ramsan Younatham wasn’t having his greatest game by any measure. He’d knocked down only one three-pointer and passed up a number of open shots late in the game. But with his team trailing in the fourth quarter, the senior guard knew if his shot was there he had to take it. Younatham got the opportunity and came through, knocking down a three-pointer from the right wing to put Niles West up by one point, 43-42, with 27 seconds left. He calmly sank two free throws on Niles West’s next possession and the Wolves escaped with a 45-42 upset victory over Loyola Academy in the IHSA Class 4A Des Plaines (Maine West) Regional semi-finals. “I kind of moon-balled it too because I saw [Loyola forward] Mike Lang coming at me and he’s …
