A man and woman in their 30s shopping at a retail store in the 6100 block of Touhy Jan. 20 at about 8:20 p.m. went to the electronics section and expressed interest in a 64 GB white Apple iPad, selling for $729.99. They asked the clerk to put it by the register so they could do additional shopping in the store and then come back for it. According to police, the woman came back to the electronics counter and, while the clerk was busy with other work, took the iPad and concealed it in her shopping cart. The man and woman then exited the store without paying for the iPad, police said. The store discovered the iPad missing during a later merchandise count. According to police, an 18-year-old girl, who is deaf and uses sign language to communicate, asked her parents Dec. 29 to go to a party in Lansing IL, and the parents said no, with the understanding there would be drug and alcohol use at the party. Police said the teen became upset at not being allowed to attend the party, and grabbed her mother's cell phone out of her hand and threw it to the ground, smashing the screen. Morrison, 43, of West Adams Street, Chicago, and Tamika Spann, of Melvina Street, Chicago, were charged with Class 3 felony retail theft Dec. 17 after security agents at a Golf Mill Shopping Center store observed them trying to remove merchandise without paying for it, police said. More than 100 people were arrested in a complex retail theft scheme that involved operations in various counties and neighboring states, the Cook County State's Attorney announced today. Malls in Skokie, Niles and Schaumburg were among the few targeted.
A holiday sting operation led to the arrest of more than a 100 "grinches" following a month-long undercover investigation, the Cook County State's Attorney announced today. According to authorities, thieves were targeting stores at Old Orchard Mall in Skokie, Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, among others, and stealing mass amounts of designer clothing only to be sold at a reduced cost on the black market. The investigation, dubbed "Operation Whoville," involved a series of separate covert undercover sting operations at six Chicago-area malls that included North Riverside, Orland Square, Woodfield, Gurnee Mills, Aurora Outlet Malls and Old Orchard, authorities said. Robert Ramage, 51, of Winnetka was charged with retail theft July 8 at about 9 a.m. after a security agent for a home-supply store contacted police. The agent saw Ramage select a ceiling fan valued at $24.97, then walk to the electrical department and select 25 circuit breakers, valued at $1,276.93, then pay for only the ceiling fan before he left the store, according to police.
