U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk expressed his support of same-marriage in a statement on his personal blog Tuesday. He is only the second Republican senator to do so; but he makes #50 in the Senate, putting support there at 50 percent.
Senator Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), is now the second Republican U.S. senator to announce his support of same-sex marriage, reports the Huffington Post. On his blog, Kirk wrote: When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others. Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this Earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back-- government has no place in the middle. Senator meets with colleagues, deals with issues.
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) gave the first update on his health in more than two months Friday thanking Dr. George Hornby and the team at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago for his improved mobility in that time. Kirk has been involved in a trial program at the institute aimed at speeding the recovery of stroke victims. In the last nine weeks, he has been involved in rigorous walking and other exercises. Surgeons reattach a portion of his skull that had been removed after stroke.
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Highland Park, continues to be listed in good condition after surgery Tuesday morning to reattach the portion of his skull that was removed after his stroke on Jan. 21, according to a statement from Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon treating the senator at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “This is an important milestone in his recovery and a step toward the next phase, rehabilitation,” Dr. Fessler said. “He remains in good condition.” Doctors performed the first operation Jan. 22 when they removed a 4- by 8-inch piece of Kirk’s skull to relieve swelling in his brain, according to statements from the senator’s office. President Barack Obama was looking for bipartisan support for his $447 billion American Jobs Act proposed to a joint session of Congress Thursday night and he got it in varying degrees from local members. Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) liked elements of free trade legislation included in the package. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) was pleased that a bill she proposed August 10 may have had some influence in the president's speech. “That’s the Obama I love to hear," Schakowsky said.
