Fire Sends Man To Burn Unit In Critical Condition

A fire at a senior living residence on Golf Road is still being investigated.

An elderly man was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition with burns Friday afternoon, then transferred to Loyola Medical Center's Burn Unit. He was injured in a fire in his apartment on the eighth floor at The Park, a senior living home at 8975 W. Golf Road, Niles. Niles Fire Department Chief Steve Borkowski said paramedics checked out seven other people, all employees of The Park, on the scene, but they declined to go to the hospital. All had gone into the apartment to try to help bring the situation under control. Paramedics checked them for smoke inhalation, Borkowski indicated. Niles Pays Tribute to Victims of 9/11

The Niles Public Library hosted a special service in honor of those who lost their lives 10 years ago in the terror attacks, and looked towards a peace- filled future

More than 75 Niles residents and civic servants joined the country in a moment of silence at noon Sunday at the Niles Public Library in honor of fallen victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Library staff hosted village officials, police officers, firefighters and residents in a solemn but hopeful remembrance of the events 10 years ago with an honor color guard, statements from civic officials and a musical tribute. Earlier: Dramatic 9/11 stories “On Sept. 11, the library stood open so we could be that symbol of freedom,” Library Director Linda Weiss said. “Libraries represent freedom of expression, celebration of diversity, a playing field that is level and a preservation of history for the future.” In the very same room where library …

"Library Director Linda Weiss said. 'Libraries represent freedom of expression, celebration of diversity, a playing field that is level and a preservation of history for the future.'" Celebration of "diversity?" Another useless, hackneyed catchword in the litany of politically "correct" verbiage. We don't "celebrate" the horribly painful deaths of three thousand victims or the grieving pain of …   more ›

Niles' New Fire Chief Tells Of Cardiac Arrests, 2 A.M. Emergencies and Tensions Of The Job

The 30-year veteran recalls the most memorable blaze he fought.

Steve Borkowski wasn’t the kind of kid who grew up chasing sirens and dreaming of being a firefighting hero. He never thought about firefighting much at all until, when he was a young man, a friend raised the idea of joining the fire department. The excitement of the job appealed to him, and Borkowksi applied. He was 23 years old when he joined the Niles Fire Department in 1981, and he has never left. “I still enjoy going out on calls and talking with the guys,” said Borkowski. “I still enjoy the tactical part of the job.” Borkowksi was named fire chief at the village board meeting May 24, after serving as acting chief since the retirement of Barry Mueller in November. Borkowski said the department’s nearly 60 employees won’t see much of a…
