Niles' Plan Should Help Avert Future Flooding

Expert says 3 construction projects in planning stages are expected to help, given flooding patterns during the April 18 storm. Trustees weigh prioritizing Cleveland Street, Main Street or Our Lady of Ransom projects.

Jeff Wickencamp was eager to see just where, and how, Niles streets and homes flooded during the April 18 storm. That's because Wickencamp, of Hey and Associates, is an engineer and consultant who has helped develop Niles' $15 million plan to alleviate future flooding. He and the village's Stormwater Committee have extensively studied how and where the village floods, and drawn up computer models, upon which the flooding prevention plan is based.  Earlier: Niles OKs $15 million plan to fight flooding The good news he shared at a Niles village board meeting April 23 is that flooding occurred as the models forecast it would. Why More Niles Homes Didn't Flood

Acting Village Manager Steve Vinezeano says the first parts of NIles' $15 million plan to reduce flooding have already started to help. Plus--street sweeping Saturday.

Electricity stayed on in the majority of homes, which provided power to keep sump pumps working for most people. A power outage would have casued many more flooded basements. Because previous floods have been so bad, the Niles village board last year approved spending $15 million on a stormwater plan designed to reduce flooding in homes and businesses. Though it's still in the planning and engineering phase, it helped this time. Earlier: Niles OKs $15 Million For Plan To Prevent Flooding Acting Niles Village Manager Steve Vinezeano said the engineers have put together very good maps which identify the areas which flood when it rains a half-…

Be careful new Mayor, you don't want to sugar coat what happened and be ambivalent to tax payer emotions, it …   more ›
