Maine East, South Swimmers and Divers Qualify for State Finals

The men will compete in the IHSA state meet Feb. 22-23.

  Several Niles/Morton Grove area swimmers and divers are heading to the state meet next weekend, according to the Illinois High School Association. The following athletes qualified in the events listed: 50-yard freestyle: 200-yard freestyle relay: 400-yard freestyle relay: Diving: The state finals will be held Feb. 22 and 23 at New Trier High School in Winnetka.

More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. This week's nominees for Athlete of the Week: Evanston's Leonard Garron, Glenbrook South's Olivia Smoliga, Maine West's Jordan Pessah, Niles West's Molly Kleppin, and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren.

More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. Niles West clinched at least a share of the CSL South championship last week. Kleppin scored nine of her 15 …

More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. Shumate had 12 points in the victory and helped Niles West move into first …

UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

With more than 71,000 votes cast, see who took this week's honor as Athlete of the Week.

More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted as the Athlete of the Week. Miller won the 100 butterfly at the Buffalo Grove Invitational, finishing in 54.63 seconds. Miller also took third in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes 6.85 seconds). The Niles West senior received 39,586 votes, or 55 percent. HONORABLE MENTION Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield –Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. The following nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 2 - Jan. 8, are: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. The senior guard had missed much of the early season with a wrist injury. Alex Sacks, senior, basketball, Deerfield – Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. Basketball + Swimming Roundup: Maine South, Niles West Off to Undefeated Starts

After the first week of the girls basketball season, Maine South and Niles West both are 3-0.

NILES WEST Girls Basketball: Jewell Loyd has the Wolves off to a 3-0 start in the first week of the season. The Notre Dame-bound senior guard scored 38 points and had 15 rebounds to aid the Wolves’ 56-38 win against Evanston in the Deerfield Thanksgiving Challenge. Liz Troyk made six three-pointers in the Wolves’ 68-44 win over Deerfield on Nov. 17. Girls Swimming: Sophomore Edan Scott took fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle at the state championships on Saturday, finishing in 24.20 seconds. Scott improved one place over last year’s sixth-place finish as a freshman. Scott qualified for the state championships in the 100 free, but just missed advancing to the finals after Friday’s preliminaries. Senior Kelly Sanks finished in 32nd place …

She became Deerfield’s second diving state champion, following Christina Loukas, who won three straight years from 2001-2003. Purdy had finished in the top five as a sophomore and junior, but finally topped the podium in her last year.
