If you want the best Black Friday deals, you'll barely have enough time to gobble down your turkey; forget about your pumpkin pie. Stores are opening earlier than ever on Thanksgiving to grab Black Friday shoppers. Toys 'R Us, Walmart, Kmart and Sears open their doors at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Target opens at 9 p.m. Many others open at midnight or very early Friday morning. Several stores are offering waves of doorbusters. Industrial areas facing more challenges, but village is in talks to fill space.
Sitting in a Niles Starbucks where customers waited four-deep in line, Niles Director of Community Development Chuck Ostman confirmed what seemed to be the case: business is pretty good in the village heading into 2011. In an interview with Niles Patch, Ostman, whose department oversees economic development, said businesses in the village have hung on despite the recessionary economy. Malls and grocery stores are performing well, while industrial areas are doing somewhat less well. "We got a lot more businesses opening than closing in 2010. I get monthly reports," he said. Bargain-hunting shoppers will be able to get into the mall as early as 4 a.m. Friday, with some department stores opening at 3 a.m. for the biggest shopping day of the year.
Black Friday is upon us. As hordes of bargain-hunting shoppers descend on local stores in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving, officials at one of the area's busiest malls are ready. For the first time ever, Kohl's and JCPenney are opening at 3 a.m., said Regina Verdico, director of marketing and business development at Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles.
