In both, callers say they are from law enforcement agencies. But they're not.
Niles police are warning of two telephone scams. In the first scam, a caller identifies himself or herself as being from the State's Attorney's office and tells you to wire money to settle an outstanding issue. The caller warns an arrest warrant will be issued for you if you do not comply. In the second scam, the caller says he or she is from the FBI and wants to install "crime fighting equipment" in your yard, and asks you to send money through Western Union. Niles police advised that law enforcement agencies do not charge for law enforcement services. They recommended that if you receive such a call, hang up. The first scam sounds like the same call I received before. This caller claimed he was Officer Wilkins and he called to demand a payment for a loan I supposedly took a few years ago. I knew the man was bluffing. First of all, I take good care of my credit rating and I NEVER forget a loan or a debt.
