Term Limits? Yes, And How About Limits To Arrogance?

A letter to the editor.

The following letter to the editor expresses the views of the author. Patch merely serves as a forum allow writers to state their opinions.  A Bugle article (11-1-12) quotes Trustee Andrew Przybylo on his deep thoughts about the impact of the term limit issue following in the wake of concerned citizen Joe Makula’s petition efforts. Przybylo’s comments have raised the eyebrows of many of us in Niles in utter disbelief at Andrew’s so-called thoughts. First, he claims that term limits could cause “GIFTED INCUMBENTS” to be replaced! Imagine his GIFTED politicians who may have “served” for a possible twenty-eight years might be replaced! This is a real horror to Andrew, maybe it even keeps him awake at night. Second, he claims that newly …

Letter: People Will Speak On Niles Term Limits, But Will They Be Heard?

After Niles silenced more than 1,000 voters who wanted term limits, it will allow them to speak Tuesday. But if a term limits make it on the April ballot, what happens if 16-year-plus officials are elected at the same time? A Letter to the Editor.

The following Letter to the Editor represents the views of the author. Patch merely provides a forum for expressing views.  This summer more than one thousand Niles citizens rose up and voiced their disapproval with the current state of their local government.  They were promptly told to sit down and shut up.  The official spin on why Niles voters won’t be considering a term limit initiative this fall is that Mr. Makula didn’t “cross his t’s and dot his i’s” properly.  Don’t believe it.  The Village attacked this initiative proposal the same way they went after the Off Track Betting referendum of a few years ago – they insisted that despite the intentions of the signature gatherers and the petition signers, Makula’s initiative could only…

With all due respect to Mr Makula and all his hard work. His petition did not meet the letter of the law . I admire his work and am sure he will come back with a petition that passes muster. What we do NOT want is the same atmosphere that we had when the OTB was rammed thru . We should not re- elect those that were a part of the problem. I will work towards that end as a citizen.   more ›

Niles Wants Petition On Term Limits Dismissed

1,018 voters signed a petition asking for term limits, the village clerk nixed it on legal grounds, citizens filed a lawsuit, and now Niles wants it dismissed. Find out what happens next.

In the battle some Niles citizens are waging to allow residents to vote on term limits for Niles elected officials, the village has made the latest move. Through a law firm, it has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought against it by a group of residents. The citizens' group, organized by resident Joe Makula, spent the summer asking residents to sign a petition that would place on the November ballot a question asking whether the Niles mayor and village board should be limited to 16 years of service. Don't miss a thing! Like Niles Patch on Facebook After 1,018 voters signed the petition, Makula filed it with Niles Village Clerk Marlene Victorine on July 27. Victorine in essence rejected it (by refusing to certify it), saying it did …

The chaos and anarchy in the above posting are more appropriate to illegal aliens and terrorists crossing our borders and taking American lives and jobs. If letting resource sucking aliens into the country isn't a form of suicide, I don;t know what is. Social Security, Medicare, etc., are all going bankrupt and the Obama-Biden-Durbin group want us to think it's all DREAMS. How wonderful. We can …   more ›

Citizens Sue To Get Term Limits On Ballot

After 1,018 citizens signed a petition to limit Niles officials to 16 years in office, the village did not certify the petition. The citizens have filed a lawsuit, to be heard Tuesday.

The possibility of term limits for Niles elected officials is not yet dead. There is still a chance that a referendum that would ask voters if they want term limits could make it onto the November ballot.  A group of Niles citizens, including Joseph Makula, have filed a lawsuit in reaction to the Village of Niles' refusal to certify the referendum petition. They have retained Chicago attorney Adam Lasker.  "I've spent a lot of time on this and I'm not going to be deterred," said Makula, whose group spent three months gathering 1,018 Niles voters' signatures.  Earlier: 1,018 Niles voters sign petition to put term limits on ballot Earlier: Niles Clerk rejects petition, refuses to certify it A judge is scheduled to hold a hearing on the …

Being an active citizen is no small feat...but my experiences with civic engagement tell me that for the most part, when grounded first and foremost in the wishes (demands?) of the community, persistence often over the long run is "rewarded" by success. Sometimes, not exactly what you wanted or were headed for, but success that opens government, increases accountability and improves community. As…   more ›
