Woman Causes Chaos, Gets Felony Charge

After she stole a wallet, police said, she hid her identity, became defiant, obstructed police, and then became suicidal. An arrest is merely an accusation and is not evidence of a conviction.

  Nakia Dickerson, 30, of North Lawndale Street, Chicago, was charged Dec. 13 with obstructing identification, resisting a peace officer and knowingly damaging property, a class 2 felony, in a theft case. Niles police responded just before 10:15 a.m. to the 8000 block of Wisner, where a 28-year-old Niles man said Dickerson had taken his wallet and refused to give it to him. Police followed Dickerson into the residence after she ran inside and locked the door, they said, and gave a name and birth date that was not her true information.  Police said while they were talking to her, she tried to hide something in her hand and run into the bathroom, and when officers tried to stop her, she became combative and tried to strike an officer with …

Thief Accosts Junior High Student On Way Home

East Maine Elementary District 63 warns students to be cautious about displaying valuables, such as cell phones, in public.

  Dr. Scott Clay, superintendent of East Maine Elementary District 63, issued the following statement. The student was walking home from Gemini Junior High School at Greenwood Avenue and Ballard Road in Niles. According to Niles Police, the incident was handled by Park Ridge police.  The statement reads: "Recently, a young male approached one of our junior high students as he was walking home from school on the west bound side of Ballard and attempted to steal his cell phone.  The police have investigated and have not apprehended the suspect.  "Our student, fortunately, was not injured in any way. Please remind your children to be cautious when alone in public.  It is never a good idea for them to have belongings like cell phones, iPods, …

Unpaid Handyman Takes Oven Door

The landlord could not show up immediately and asked if she could pay the next day. An arrest is merely an accusation, and does not indicate a conviction.

  A landlord who owns a building in the 8400 block of Milwaukee called police on Sept. 10 regarding an incident with a repairman. The landlord had a tenant moving in on Sept. 7, and the tenant told her the oven in the apartment was not working. The landlord could not leave her day job to come to the apartment, and she could not secure the services of a repair service she was familiar with. She found the name of a repairman in a Polish newspaper, called him and arranged for him to meet the tenant at the apartment. She instructed him to check the oven and phone her with a quote for the cost of the repair. He never provided a quote, but around 7 p.m., he called and demanded $100 immediately to pay for the inspection, police said. She told him…

Minors Steal Alcohol - Employee 'Fires' Back

A Skokie man is charged with felony discharge of a firearm after shooting at a group of teens who stole liquor from his family's business on Friday. It marks the third known shooting in Skokie since May.

  A Skokie man is facing felony charges after he allegedly shot at several juveniles who stole a bottle of alcohol from his family's business, Dollar House Plus, 4616 Oakton St., on Friday. It marks the third known shooting in Skokie since May 23. Karam Odisho, 27, of the 8000 block of Kolmar Avenue, was charged with felony discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a weapon, police said. What began as a petty theft ended in a shooting after Odisho chased several teens who stole a bottle of vodka from his family's store. After catching up with the group, Odisho fired one shot in the direction of the offenders, according to the police report. Cell Phone Theft At Restaurant

A 21-year-old female had her cell phone stolen from a local restaurant and fraudulent charges were made on the account. No suspects have been arrested.

A theft of a cell phone was reported to Niles Police. The incident happened when a 21-year-old female from Glenview was dining at a restaurant in the 8400 block of Golf Road, she got up to get a drink from the self-serve drink station. She left her cell phone on the table. When she returned with her beverage, the phone was gone. The incident occurred on July 31 at approximately 8:30 p.m. The Victim was not sure that she had her phone with her, but when she returned home and searched, she realized that it had been taken from her table while she went to get the drink. The victim went to the restaurant and they did not have her phone nor any surveillance video of the incident. She cancelled the cell phone service at approximately 11:30 p.m. …

Man Squeezed While At Urinal In Restroom

The offender denied squeezing the man's buttocks while he was using the facilities. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

  When a 62-year-old Chicago man went to use the restroom at Golf Mill Shopping Center June 27 just before 3:15 p.m., he noticed a 68-year-old man standing by the urinals with his genitalia hanging out, according to police. While the Chicago man was using the urinal, the older man squeezed his buttocks, according to the report. The offender denied doing such a thing. The victim, who did not want to sign complaints, later told police that when he walked into the restroom, he thought it was odd that the other man was not facing the urinals. $5,000 Ring Stolen

Man last saw it before he had a cleaning firm come to his home.

An 82-year-old Niles man who lives in a condo in the 8800 block of Golf Road reported to police Thursday that a diamond ring valued at $5,000 had been taken from a desk drawer in his home. He last observed it before he had a duct cleaning firm come into his home to do work. He requested police follow-up. Employee suspected of theft Tina Stanley of Des Plaines was charged with theft after a loss prevention agent for a retail store in the 9500 block of Golf Road observed her Sept. 14 on suspicion of theft. The agent observed her remove her cash drawer, walk to the service desk and put a $10 bill in her pocket. She gave statements to the agent admitting to thefts on Sept. 9, 10 and 14, in the total amount of $160. Her court date is Nov. 1. in…

Burning Cigarette Starts Fire on Wooden Porch

Niles fire units put out the blaze in the 8100 block of Elizabeth.

Niles police and fire units responded to a porch fire in the 8100 block of Elizabeth Oct. 20, and the fire department extinguished the blaze, which police said was caused by a cigarette that had not been fully extinguished. A neighbor said he had seen the blaze from his window and called 911.
