Perhaps Ben Stiller's "Zoolander" wasn't that far off with its Derelict fashion concept. More than 35 recycled-designed costumes were on display at the Solid Waste Agency of Cook County's (SWANCC) Trashy Fashion Show. The models represented more than 50 designers. According to SWANCC, 90 percent of the outfits were made from items that are found in everyday garbage, including old chef coats, t-shirts, prom dresses, Halloween costumes, jeans, candy wrappers and packaging materials, among other things (like VHS tapes and umbrellas). For the sixth annual showing, this year's theme was based on movies like "Harry Potter," "The Hunger Games" and "Black Swan." In the past, the young local designers who create fashion from recyclables have had audiences marveling over their beautiful, fun, and sometimes just quirky creations. The fact that they've created them out of gum wrappers, or seatbelt straps, or plastic sheeting only adds to the fun--and sense of eco-chic. Models show off designs made of materials diverted from the landfill in an effort to showcase environmental awareness.
Nearly 450 people turned out for the fifth annual Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook Cook County (SWANCC) Trashy Fashion Show, held at the Skokie Holiday Inn, 5300 W. Touhy Ave, Thursday night. Forty-two designers decked out models in outfits made of 90 percent recycled materials such as plastic bags, pillow shams, newspapers, chip bags and packaging materials. The goal was to use creativity to show the importance of recycling and reusing.
