Sheriff Launches Sex Offender Halloween Initiative

The Cook County Sheriff has launched a Halloween initiative Wednesday.

The Cook County Sheriff's Department launched a Halloween initiative Wednesday to make sure that registered sex offenders were in compliance. Patch published a map of where sex offenders live in Park Ridge earlier this month and a list of where sex offenders live in Niles and Morton Grove. More information is available on the Sheriff's Department Sex Offender Registry.  Officers conducted un-scheduled address verification premise checks for sex offenders in Cook County and Ford Heights, a press release states. Keeping Trick-or-Treaters Away From Sex Offenders' Homes

Niles parents can check addresses of registered offenders; police offer safety tips.

As children prepare to go trick-or-treating Sunday, parents can take an active role in protecting them from sex offenders who live in the community. Illinois law restricts some sex offenders from having certain kinds of contact with children, such as distributing candy on Halloween. Niles police warn the best way to keep children safe is to trick-or-treat in groups, with parents accompanying them.  Parents who want avoid sex offenders can check their addresses in the Illinois State Police database  (enter "Niles" in far left-hand column).
