Stadler had eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and the victory over their CSL South rivals snapped Maine South’s 18-game winning streak. Reggie Murphy, freshman, track and field, Evanston - Murphy was a key contributor in helping the Wildkits win the CSL South conference track meet for the second consecutive season. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6: Alexis Melchiorre, senior, girls swimming, Deerfield – Melchiorre helped lead Deerfield to a third consecutive Central Suburban League North swimming championship last weekend. The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win. Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend. Later completed the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds.The …

Both volleyball teams lost in the regional finals, but Niles West's boys cross country team advanced to the state championships in Peoria.
Girls Volleyball: Both Niles North and Niles West fell in the regionals finals of the Class 4A playoffs. The Vikings fell 25-11, 25-17 to No. 1 seed New Trier while Niles West couldn’t get over the hump against Loyola falling 25-22, 25-22 in two close games. The Wolves’ early playoff exit comes one season after Niles West advanced all the way to the sectional final. Last season they set the school record for wins and came up one short of equaling that mark in 2011 with a 23-12 record. Even with the loss to top-seeded New Trier, Niles North did set a school record with 23 wins during the season. The Vikings carried only two seniors on the varsity team this season so they will look to 2012 with high expectations. Boys Cross Country: With…

NILES NORTH Volleyball: The Vikings rallied to beat Deerfield at home on Oct. 13 19-25, 25-20, 25-14. Andrea Lopez led the team with nine kills for the match while Taylor Louis chipped in with eight kills as well. Niles North got a big lift from Alethea Busch, who had four kills and a block in the decisive third game. Niles North also used a three-set rally to defeat Maine West 20-25, 25-11, 25-20 on Oct. 18. Lopez had 13 kills while Louis had 12 kills and two blocks. The Vikings improved to 21-13 on the season, including 7-2 in the Central Suburban League North and earned the No. 8 seed in the Class 4A Glenview Sectional. Sophomore Olivia Rusek was named the tournament MVP and Milena Zalloni was also honored on the all-tournament team. Rusek had eight kills in the Wolves’ championship win. Niles West didn’t lose a set during the entire tournament, beating Jones, Brooks and Simeon in pool play. They defeated Curie in the semifinals to set up a rematch with Jones in the finals.
