Library Director Resigned, Albers Says

Ben Schapiro resigned July 7.

Library Board President Mark Albers has issued an official press release about the departure of Library Director Ben Schapiro, saying that he resigned. The details of Schapiro's departure July 7 — including whether he resigned or was fired — had been unclear. Albers cited, "differing visions for the future direction of the Library," in explaining Schapiro's decision to leave. Library Board Appoints Interim Co-Directors, Still Mum About Previous Director

Board member says "immediate" steps are being taken to find a replacement for former director.

The library board recently appointed two interim replacements to fill former Executive Director Ben Schapiro’s shoes, but officials remain closemouthed about the details surrounding his departure. The board appointed Assistant Director Kevin Justie and Natalya Fishman, head of reference, as interim co-directors at a July 14 board meeting.  “They are well-respected by the staff,” said Catherine Peters, treasurer of the library board. Morton Grove Library Board Approves Urban Garden

The contentious board meeting discusses the role of the library.

After a spirited discussion on Thursday night, the board of the Morton Grove Public Library voted 6 to 1 to approve the library's urban garden project. Trustee Catherine Peters was the one board member to oppose it, calling it a "tremendously ill-conceived plan." Library staff organized the urban garden as a volunteer project which was approved by the library board earlier this year. Flip through the PDF of the plan attached to this article. Near the end of May, Head of Outreach, PR and Programming Rosetta Metz emailed members of the press with news of the community urban garden, describing the project as an edible garden with three 4 feet by 8 feet garden beds on the south side of the library, facing Lincoln Avenue. It's a maximum 1-hour program for a librarian teaching kids about gardening when they are scheduled to come in, like a camp group, or Cub Scouts,etc.. Showing them that what they buy in the stores, they can grow themselves. Maybe a staff member may have to put 5 minutes of overseeing the volunteers while the volunteers are weeding, or fertilizing, etc. but really, you are argueing against 3- 4X8 …   more ›

MG Library Grabs 'Bronze' in National Contest

Patrons to receive $1,000 worth of Playaway audio units for Morton Grove's third-place finish.

After months of promoting, voting and hoping, the Morton Grove Public Library rang up a third place in a national contest and won $1,000 worth of audio units for library patrons to use. Since early November, Morton Grove sat atop the national polling in Playaway's "Picture This Contest," as voters cast ballots from across the U.S. in support of their favorite library branch. From among hundreds of libraries, Morton Grove made the top 10 finalists with its slide presentation that involved mannequins dressed up as library patrons utilizing Playaway products.
