Michael Divincenzo faces eight misdemeanor charges related to reports of physical assaults at Maine West High School in Des Plaines in 2012, according to Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.
A former varsity boys soccer coach and teacher at Maine West High School faces multiple criminal charges related to reports of bullying and hazing, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez stated on Wednesday. Michael Divincenzo was charged with eight misdemeanor counts including three counts of battery, one count of hazing and four counts of failure to report abuse as mandated, in incidents on June 1, 2012, Aug. 31, 2012 and Sept. 26, 2012, according to court documents. Divincenzo is accused of threatening freshmen students to have the varsity players stick their thumbs up their buttocks if they did not communicate properly during a soccer drill, according to the charges. One former Des Plaines man is fighting for his life, and what concerns him most is financially supporting his family. Neftali Hernandez, 35, was used to working every day before he got sick in 2009. Even after four years of medical treatment, and now going to the hospital twice a week for blood transfusions, the most difficult part of the ordeal, Hernandez said, was not being able to work and support his family. All roads are now open for traffic with the exception of Golf Road between River Road and East River Road in Des Plaines. The Des Plaines River near Des Plaines is at flood stage 7.13 feet, according to the National Weather Service's report at 1:45 p.m. on April 25. Flood action stage is 5.0 feet. The Des Plaines Public Works and Engineering Department has announced that garbage collection will continue on a normal schedule with the exception of yard waste collection. Oakton Community College will remain closed due to flooding in Des Plaines, according to a spokesperson.
Oakton Community College's Des Plaines campus will remain closed due to flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23-24, according to a spokesperson. Janet Spector-Bishop stated in an email to Patch that the campus in Skokie would be open, but many events at the campus in Des Plaines were rescheduled or canceled. A Des Plaines man is asking for the community’s help to find a bone marrow donor to possibly save his life, according to a public announcement from a nonprofit organization helping to promote the effort. Neftali Hernandez, 35, of Des Plaines, has undergone cancer treatment for the last three years. After being diagnosed with aplastic anemia, he has not been the same, stated Mariana Sgarbi, spokesperson for the Icla da Silva Foundation. “First, he can no longer work,” Sgarbi stated. “He held jobs like roofing and landscaping, as well as restaurant jobs, all of which need the person to be very healthy and strong.” A bone marrow drive for Hernandez will be held at Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, 1170 N.
