New D-67 Superintendent Eager, Knows Challenges Lie Ahead

Dr. Beth Sagett-Flores is working on the transition with resigning superintendent Dr. Jamie Reilly. Sagett-Flores will have to hire key people ASAP, plus oversee construction. She wants to learn about the district before considering a referendum.

Dr. Beth Sagett-Flores hopes to get a head start meeting people in Golf School District 67 this month and next. That's because when she officially starts as the district's superintendent on July 1, she'll be walking into a construction zone. She will likely have to work off-site, she said, because major renovation projects will be going on at both Hynes Elementary and Golf Middle School. Not only that, but she will need to hire a new principal and a new business manager--and she knows she will be leading a district in which voters three times have defeated referendum requests to increase the tax rate. (A construction referendum did pass; hence the construction work.) Earlier: District 67 referendum loses Far from being daunted, Sagett-…

D67 To Spend $9,500 On Superintendent Search

After Dr. Jamie Reilly announced her resignation last week, a consultant told the school board the search could be expedited, with Feb. 28 the last day for candidates to apply, according to Pioneer Press.

Golf Elementary School District 67 board members approved spending $9,500 to have the Illinois Association of School Boards conduct a search for a new superintendent, the Morton Grove Champion reported. Superintendent Dr. Jamie Reilly announced her resignation on Thursday.  Earlier: D-67's Reilly resigns, board votes to place referendum question on February ballot  The IASB would get a community survey onto the website as early as Friday, Dec. 14, and set Feb. 28 as a deadline for candidate applications, with a decision by March, the newspaper reported.  District 67 had placed two referendum questions, one for a tax rate increase and one for a construction bond referendum, on the March ballot, and both failed. In the November 6 election…

D-67 May Ask For Tax Hike On February Ballot

In the Nov. 6 election, the district won one of its referendum questions and lost the other. It may ask again in the Feb. 26 primary.

Golf School District 67 plans to hold a meeting Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 6:30 to discuss when and how to again ask voters for funding, after voters turned down one of its two referendum requests in the Nov. 6 election.  The district, which educates students from Morton Grove and Niles, also has a full board meeting scheduled for Dec. 6.  In the election last March, the school district asked voters to approve two referendum questions: a $7.9 million construction bond referendum that would have made improvements and repairs to the district's two school buildings, and a $1.14 million tax rate increase that would have provided operating funds, which would pay for such things as teacher salaries and programs. Nice attempt at deflection but no sale. DiMaria forcing a primary gives dist 67 one more bite at the apple. It also costs the taxpayers of Morton Grove extra dollars to run a primary election.   more ›

Golf D-67 Passes 1 of 2 Referendum Questions

Voters said yes to the ballot question asking for repairs and improvements to the two school buildings, but turned thumbs down on a tax rate increase that would have funded operations and programming.

UPDATE 1:00am The bond referendum, to repair and improve facilities in the district has passed 53.1 percent to 46.9 percent. UPDATE 11:46 p.m. - With four of five precincts reporting, it appears the bond referendum, which would make improvements and repairs to the school buildings, may have passed; however, one precinct experienced a technical problem. A machine that tabulates paper ballots broke down, and results have been delayed because those ballots will have to be tallied at another location. However, District 67's other ballot question, the tax rate increase, has been defeated. Jeff Gwozdz, a parent on the referendum committee, said, "I think it (the facilities referendum) was an easier one for people to vote for. It was physical …

Consolidation rarely reduces the number of administrators. Just look throughout the township at the K-8 single facility districts and you will find the same number of admistrators as the 2 building SD67: 1 superintendent and 2 principals. For the record: SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ELECTIONS ARE THIS APRIL. NOMINATIONS END CHRISTMAS EVE. Those who think they can help please put your name into nomination …   more ›

Trim Or Kill D67 Request? Readers Are Split

In Patch's poll, about half of readers say they're OK with D67 trimming the dollar amount of what it asks residents and mounting a new referendum. The other half want the district to accept the "no" vote and not come back with a new referendum. Only a few

On Friday, we asked you to vote in a poll that laid out three options for what Golf School District 67 should do now, after voters said no to both its referendum requests in last Tuesday's election. The poll received 70 votes, with the results as follows:  That meant "scale back" or "take no as the answer" added up to 90 percent of votes; only 8 percent said the district should re-mount the referendum as it was configured on the March 20 ballot. Poll: What Should District 67 Do Now?

Both referendums failed, but the district still has aging facilities and educational and other needs. Give your opinion on what steps the district should take next.

Many District 67 parents and administrators worked for months to craft and promote the two ballot questions put to voters in Tuesday's election. Voters said no to both, however, leaving the district to make cuts. Before the referendum, it outlined on its website which cuts it would make if one or the other, or both, referendum(s) were to fail. Earlier: Both District 67 referendums fail The district is holding a meeting Friday night at 6 p.m. The agenda does not specify whether the board will listen to public comments; Patch will update if this information can be obtained. In terms of the big picture, what direction do you think the district should move in? Vote in the poll below. The poll is not scientific, but please vote only once. Get …

The trouble is the cumulative growth rate of spending by the school districts. It is unsustainable like many things in this state. Look at Niles North SD 219 100% plus spending increase over 10 years. Look at your most recent tax bill! We are being asked to support too many administrators, too many lucrative teacher salaries and benefits that far exceed those of the tax payers within the …   more ›

Funding Woes: District 67 At A Standstill

Part one in a two-part series on Golf School District 67's financial difficulties.

Negotiations between the Morton Grove Park District and Golf School District 67 are moving about as quickly as ice after the park district's initial offer to purchase Frank Hren Park, which it currently leases from the school district. "A couple of months ago, we made an overture about purchasing it outright," said Brian Sullivan, director of the park district. Sullivan said an appraiser valued the property in the $1 million to $2 million range, a number that was extended to the school district. "We said, 'Here's the best we can do and still be fiscally sound.'"  But that dollar amount was lower than what school administrators had hoped to get out of the property, so talks have frozen for now, he said. "Right now it's on hold," Sullivan …
