ESPN Hoop Gurlz ranks her best in Illinois, No. 4 nationally.
Some consider Wolves' Jewell Loyd and Lady Raiders' Morgan Tuck as best players in state, but Nia Moore had a good game.
VILLA PARK—While Monday’s final McDonald’s Shootout contest was supposed to be about Bolingbrook’s Morgan Tuck and Niles West’s Jewell Loyd, Lady Raider Nia Moore perhaps had the most impressive game. The Raiders’ senior forward scored a career-high 15 points as Bolingbrook rolled over the Wolves 67-36 on Monday. Moore, an Illinois recruit who has been working on her scoring this season, missed her first three shots in the first half. In the second half, she was 5-of-6 from the field and stayed aggressive in the post to force Niles West (16-6) to defend someone else besides Tuck. The basketball star hopes to achieve NCAA Freshman of the Year while at Notre Dame University next year, and someday start a West Side community center to give people hope.
In the world of sports, it's rare to find a star athlete whose modesty is a defining characteristic of her personality. Jewell Loyd, senior guard at Niles West High School in Skokie, is one of them. 5’10” Loyd is currently ranked among the top three recruits in the nation for girls college basketball. In November, she signed her National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the University of Notre Dame, and since then she's kept up the tour de force. She says her main criteria in selecting Notre Dame were the quality of the academics, the strength and compatibility of the basketball program, and its proximity to home. Earlier: Niles West's Jewell Loyd “I don’t think my dad’s ever missed a game, so it’s kind of a big deal that he’s …

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. All the talk at the start of the girls season was about the three-team race for the CSL South title between Niles West, Maine South and New Trier. Yet in mid-December, the last remaining undefeated team is Glenbrook South. New Trier still seems to be the class of the CSL on the boys side, especially after Glenbrook North fell to Deerfield last week. Maine South jumped up to No. 2 and is our biggest riser this week. Meanwhile Glenbrook North fell down to No. 5. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 3 RANKINGS 1. New Trier (1) – The boys took care of their first two CSL South games by easily dispatching of Niles West and Glenbrook South last week. But the …

New Trier won its own tournament and Glenbrook North took home the championship at Niles West. New Trier, Maine South and Niles West all stayed undefeated on the girls side. It will be really fun to watch these three teams battle once CSL South games hit the schedule. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. PATCH PRESEASON RANKINGS 1. New Trier (1) – Both teams captured tournament titles and remained undefeated on the young season. While the girls team has really been untested so far, the boys got a really nice victory over…

Niles West moved up a spot after the Wolves swept their series against Niles North.
Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. December brings Christmas music, the real threat of snow flurries and, of course, conference games for high school basketball. New Trier remains on top after the girls team beat Maine South for their first victory in the CSL South, but the Trevians are far from invincible with the boys team losing to Warren. On the boys side, Evanston edged Maine South on a last-minute layup while Niles North and Niles West had another couple of entertaining games in their annual early-season rivalry series. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 3 RANKINGS 1. New Trier (1) – The boys lost their first game of the season against Warren -- ranked No. 2 in the state – but …
