A manager at a grocery store in the 5700 block of Touhy (Pointe Plaza) reported May 10 that a man had entered the store on May 5 at about 9 p.m., gone to the rice aisle and began to cut open several bags of rice with a box cutter or similar tool. She did not know why he did it. The man came into the store again on May 10 and purchased several food items. The manager agreed that if and when he returned, she would contact police and a member of the store's management would tell the man he is no longer welcome in the store. Natasha Wood, 30, of Round Lake Park was charged with retail theft March 29 after an incident at a store in the 8500 block of Golf Road. A security agent said he saw her go to exchange some items while she had store bags in her shopping cart, according to the police report. She selected other merchandise from store displays and put it under the shopping bags in her cart, went to the self check-out and paid for some items, leaving the others concealed under the shopping bags, the report indicated. A Niles woman, 50, reported to police Jan. 29 she was missing from her purse about $1,500 cash, two gold and diamond rings (one of which was her wedding ring) and a gold chain with a gold cross pendant. She had seen the money in her purse the day before, and the jewelry three days prior. She suspects a 26-year-old female family member, who she says has a key to her home and sometimes stays there, and at other times stays with a boyfriend in Skokie. On Jan. 30, a security agent for a store in the 8500 block of Golf Road discovered four laptop computers missing from a store display, according to a police report. She reviewed security video, which showed offenders taking the merchandise just after 1 a.m., police said. Two of the offenders used pliers to cut the security cables before removing the laptops. Security footage showed them getting into a silver Audi in the parking lot, and a third offender also getting into the car. The third offender was also seen on video inside the store, looking at the computer area before the other two offenders entered that area, police said. The cumulative value of the laptops was $2,722. A doctor with offices in the 7900 block of Milwaukee Avenue contacted police Jan. 25 to say she got a phone call from a Chicago pharmacy notifying her that they had received 33 electronic prescriptions for narcotics from her office, according to the report. The prescriptions had the correct identifying information for the doctor and were written to several different patients' names. The doctor told the pharmacy she had not written them, police said. She called the Drug Enforcement Agency and left a message, then contacted the Illinois Department of Medical Regulation, which advised her to make a police report.
